Indian rice starts reaching domestic markets

ISLAMABAD: Soon after the announcement of 636 negative items while replacing the already existing positive list for trade with India, Pakistan for the first time in history started importing rice from the neighbouring country.

Pakistani buyers have placed the first import order for at least 2,500 tonnes rice, while almost 100 tonnes have reached the markets in Punjab.

It’s expected the traders would further place orders for imports as the commodity in Indian market was available at cheaper rates than Vietnam, Thailand and other countries.

“This was a major development in the history as the Indian commodity was coming to Pakistan, despite having a huge stock in the country,” said CEO Harvest Tradings, Ahmad Jawad on Monday. He said the reason behind the import of rice despite having huge local stock was the major difference in price of the commodity as India had reduced the benchmark price of rice drastically.

“Though the development would badly hit the role of middleman interims of profit, the imports of cheaper rice especially basmati from outside the border would make competition in the country interims of price and may benefit the retail customers” Jawad remarked.

He however was of the view Pakistani basmati rice would retain its importance in the domestic market owing to its special taste.

As both countries are members of the South Asia Free Trade Area (SAFTA) established in January 2006, trade between the two countries is unnaturally small and the scope for gains from increased trade is correspondingly large.

The Indian rice has also diversified qualities, like original basmati, duplicate basmati and others available at comparatively cheaper rates.

Indian government had reduced the minimum export price of non-basmati rice after exports failed to pick up.

The government had allowed limited exports of non-basmati rice after a bumper crop in 2010-11. Earlier, India had banned exports of rice, except the costlier basmati variety, to beef up supplies in the domestic market and cool down soaring prices in April 2008. Presently, the increased domestic production and lower export of basmati, last year had resulted in abundant availability in the Indian domestic market. These factors brought down prices of this elite variety, but Pakistan rice will retain its importance in the domestic markets owing to its special taste, Jawad said. app

India Show huge draw in Pak

A three-day India Show organised at Lahore got immense response from Pakistani industrialists, who expressed keenness to participate in the forthcoming India engineering Sourcing Show (IESS) at Mumbai from March 11 to 13. “Ninety-eight stalls, showcasing consumers goods, gems and jewellry, products from tea and hospitality sector apart from a stall of EEPC with catalogues of engineering goods, were put up at the event.

A large number of entrepreneurs from Pakistan thronged the event organised from February 11 to 13,” senior assistant director of Engineering Export Promotion Council (EEPC), Opinder Singh told Hindustan Times.

A number of visitors enquired about the engineering sector, Singh said, adding that Pakistan’s commerce minister Makhdoom Amin Fahim visited EEPC stall along with the Lahore Chamber of Commerce president and had a brief interaction with EEPC representatives.

When traders requested him to add more engineering goods in the positive list of bilateral trade for free trade between the two sides, Fahim assured an early amendment after due discussions with his Indian counterpart.

The second day also saw good footfall and visitors were seen enquiring about engineering industry, Opinder added. On the concluding day, commerce, industry and textile minister Anand Sharma addressed businessmen in the conference hall, while his Pakistani counterpart addressed the Indian delegation.

Many Pakistani businessmen and industrialists showed interest in industries related to auto parts, agriculture equipment (tractors and spare parts) and renewable energy sources and power plants (solar and wind energy), said Opinder.

Tata Nano was the hot topic of discussion and some businessmen wanted to know if the dealership of the car can be allowed through the Wagah route, Singh said. He added that more than 300 trade inquiries were registered at the information booth set up at the India Show.

The IESS at Mumbai was also discussed and some industrialists showed interest in participating in the event for technology sharing.

The IESS to be organised by EEPC is likely to see participation from about 1,000 importers from all over the world.

Maiden trip of Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar to Pakistan

NEW DELHI: Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar will lead a delegation of MPs to Pakistan on a five-day goodwill mission, beginning Tuesday aimed at promoting bilateral ties and bringing about an improved understanding of political processes through interaction with politicians and intellectuals.

Kumar told TOI, "This (her visit) is a strong assertion of the desire of the people of India for friendship with the people of Pakistan." Kumar will be the first Speaker of Indian Parliament to visit Pakistan.

The delegation includes BJP's Shahnawaz Hussain and Tarun Vijay, Madan Lal Sharma (Congress), Birendra Prasad Baishya (AGP), Saidul Haque (CPM) and Inder Singh Namdhari (Independent). "But when it comes to friendship with Pakistan, there are no differences," she said.

In Islamabad, Kumar will meet the women's parliamentary caucus comprising 60 women MPs of Pakistan. Besides her counterpart, she will meet Pakistani president Asif Zardari, PM Yousuf Gilani and chairman of the Senate. She will also visit the UNESCO world heritage site at Takshila.

Kumar's fondness for Urdu and ease with poetry is expected to connect with Pakistani intellectuals when she meets them in Lahore. She will also meet the governor and chief minister of Pakistan's Punjab province.

Pakistan too has a woman Speaker - Dr Fahmida Mirza - for the first time. "She is a good friend of mine," said Kumar. That helps in fostering friendly ties between the two countries.

The two Speakers have several things in common. Both were professional - Kumar a diplomat and Mirza a doctor - before they entered politics. Also, they come from political families.

The aim of the mission is to push ties as despite hitches bilateral relations have been on a positive trajectory after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh met Gilani on the sidelines of the SAARC summit in Thimphu in 2010. "After that, confidence-building measures resumed, dialogue has started. This should go on and be strengthened," said Kumar. That is the whole aim to boost bilateral travel, trade and commerce.
