KATHMANDU - India has lost its long-standing status as Nepal’s sole fuel provider, after the Himalayan nation signed an agreement with China for the supply of petroleum products.

The agreement came after India stopped fuel and other items under the pretext of blockade of land routes from India due to unrest over the new constitution. “Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) and China National United Fuel Corporation formalised a long-term commercial agreement in Beijing,” a senior Nepali bureaucrat said.

Under the agreement, the bureaucrat said that China will supply fuel at international rates, which Kathmandu might find cheaper than its imports from India. To begin with, China will fulfill at least a third of Nepal’s requirements. Nepal decided to look beyond India for fuel supply while the two nations were locked in a who-blinks-first game.

“Our officials were in talks with China since Tuesday,” the bureaucrat said. “From now on, we do not have to depend on one particular country for fuel,” the bureaucrat said when asked if China alone would be able to fulfill Nepal’s energy requirements. Reports from Nepal, however, said that the capacity of the highways from the north needs to be checked in order to ensure steady flow of supplies.

KATHMANDU, Nepal - Fuel-starved Nepal has signed an agreement with China to provide gasoline, diesel and cooking gas after India restricted its supplies as a result of ongoing political protests in the Himalayan nation.

Nepal Oil Corporation official Deepak Baral said Thursday that a memorandum of understanding was signed with China National United Oil Corporation in Beijing. He says details still need to be worked out.

China's Foreign Ministry said on Thursday that China will provide Nepal with "a certain amount" of emergency fuel aid as an energy crisis deepens in the Himalayan nation.

"In response to a request from Nepal, China's government has decided in recent days to provide Nepal with a certain amount of emergency fuel to help Nepal resolve the difficulties caused by a domestic fuel shortage," foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang told a regular briefing.

It would be the first time Nepal would be getting fuel from China, effectively ending India's monopoly on the fuel supply.

India has been accused of restricting fuel supplies - a charge New Delhi denies -since Madhesi ethnic groups in southern Nepal, with whom it has close cultural ties, began protesting Nepal's new constitution, seeking more rights.

This is not good news at all. Chinese policy to encircle India and India should think seriously on this matter.

BJP wanted Nepal to became a theocratic nation while the common people there hated the saffronist radicalism exported to Nepal. Although it's a bad news for India since they are siding to enemy.
RSS will want to push Akhand Bharat yagn again and we can see more neighbouring countries shy away from present Saffron extremists ruling India.

:o:
I think cause of tension was something else .

LOL,I think India did it deliberately.

Nepal gets "Heavily Subsidized" Fuel from India. So,now either they'll get Fuel for "Market Price",or it'll be a burden on China.

I really welcome the decision.

People need to understand that there is no Great game going on here. Land locked Nepal whose southern plains recently are erupted with violence by the Madheshi and few other groups over the constitution row, is bound to look up to its northern trade routes with the Chinese for the essential supplies.

It is the only reasonable step Nepal could have taken, not to shift from one power block to another but to revitalize its essential stocks. India has perpetually denied of blocking supplies from its end, criticizing it for this bizarre situation is quite unfair. Once this agitation comes to an end, there is nothing to believe that Nepal will not turn back to its traditional supply routes again.
