Debunking the ‘String of Pearls’ theory while referring to the Chinese military and commercial relationship along its sea lines of communication, former Chief of Army General (retd) J J Singh said speculations that India was countering China against the theory by improving relations with Japan and other South Asian countries did not hold much ground.

Singh was in PU on Friday to deliver a lecture on ‘Challenges Ahead in India and China relations’ organised on the occasion of China Day by the India China Friendship Association. General Singh, who is studying McMahon Line in a new light, indicated both countries had to decide how much history could be stretched about the crucial line.

Speaking on the occasion, he said an early solution to the question regarding the McMahon Line, which is the Indo-China border, is being emphasised by both countries.

He also said India need not fear China as India too possesses nuclear power, which will act as a deterrant. “The other natural barrier to win a war from any side is the terrain that is not insurmountable,” he added.

It is significant to note General Singh was the first Chief of Army Staff to lead a tri-service delegation to participate in joint training with China. Singh was of the view that joint trainings would bridge the trust deficit. “The Chinese President expressed similar views on the issue of joint exercises. Negotiations will challenge preconceived notions,” he added.

Discussing the issue, PU V-C Professor Arun Kumar Grover said the question of boundary dispute can be resolved. He added that the scientific communities of the two countries shared harmonious relations.

I don't know why we can't sit down to take negotiation for territory disputes and cooperate for economic development peacefully.Everything will be okay if we determined to solve the old problems.

Nowadays, most Chinese don't wanna war at all. They are busy in working and improving their lives.

India never need to fear about China. If we can trade ,why we need war?.

India is a super power。

India needs not fear anyone or anything。

kevin the problem is that India has tried to negotiate a solution with China but these border meetings have been draging on for decades. The reality is China was simply stalling for time, till its military becomes more potent. China has settled every border issue amicably with every other neighbore except for South China Sea.

True, but the CCP is not the representatives of the people as much as you think they are. The fear is from the CCP and for good reason. They are the only party in China, and with out them, who else is there?
Also, its true that Indias security concern is not China, despite what some politicians say hear, and America to get more funding. Its the United States! However India is a long way from ever measuring up to the US, until we have caught up technologically, we can never afford a conflict with them. For now Indian softpower will make sure the US doesn't bomb us, however we should reduce spending on the military and focus on domestic issues of technology and infastructure. As the investment trend heads to south asia, India must be open to do business other wise it will be our lose!

Lack of understanding of the CCP is one, but we already are happy with the status quo. We don`t want more land, Akasi chin is a barren wasteland, and not worth the fight even if could take it. CCP has to change the views of some of its members who think everything is China`s because it was so historically in legends etc... by the same termonology India should have Pakistan, and Afghanistan, and lets not forget Malaysia and Burma as well as Singapore. lol
The border is hear to stay, but the problem is the CCP tends to over react when its domestic problems break out. Also there is that support for Pakistan, and the nuclear proliferation.
Biggest problem is the lack of CCPs responsible actions on a global level. They just keep selling weapons to anyone. Perhaps to spread their influence but this kind of influence is short lived.

First of all,we have gotten a valuable consensus:both Indian and Chinese people don't want war.The controversy is how to distribute the disputed land.

Secondly,I understand your censure for CCP's greed.Because our government said the same words that India refuse compromise. So sticking to our own colors make no sense.

Thirdly,It means creating a key time, that we need cooperate or fight together, will bring a good solution. We can't solve this problem nowadays because China and India relationship is not good enough at present.

Fourthly, how to create the key time?As you said,India (as well as China) must open to do business with each other. It will help both China and India to develop.

Thank you a lot ,help me to get rid of the endless argument.

Frankly, i'm a lot more wary of Pakistan and the USA, than i am of China.
I do not mean to say that we should be anti west. But there is an element of cultural hegemony, intrinsic to how these societies are constituted. The first, with relation to the 'otherisation' of non-believers in their doctrine, and the second, with respect to a very noticeable way of framing the world in universalist liberalist doctrines which arise fundamentally from the judeo christian tradition.

China is a proud country, that is doing what we have failed to do as yet. It is looking at the world through its own lenses, evolving its own ideas of modernity, rather than being intellectually colonised by the west. The latter, is a far bigger threat than any boundary dispute. There is indeed, no reason why India and China cannot be allies. Trolls aside, Pakistan is china's card against india, much as the new relations we are forming are India's card against China. This is merely pragmatic, and profitable in the short run. No person with any element of realism could deny this. However, when our immediate tactics trap us into an iron cage,to which we restrict our options, that's going to hurt both sides.

Actually the Indian side, likes the status quo, they don't want more land. They just want to agree on the current LOC as the border. Akasi chin is useless. But the CCP doesn't want to hand over Arunachal Pardesh (South Tibet). However is impossible for India to hand it over, since Arunachal Pardesh has joined the Indian union. Within the CCP, some are greedy enough to think keeping this dispute open will help in the future. Also, on the Indian side, it involves the states, they have power. Akasi chin although useless, must be brought up wit Kashmir as well. These are useless rocks for the most part, why the CCP wanted them doesn't add up at times.
However, it is worth noting that during the g20 summits and any global summit, India and China see eye to eye more often. The disagree with the Western nations, ie NATO. Even if India and Americas new relationship is getting better, India especially the older generation, does not trust the US, the military top brass thinks the same. In the perspective of both India, and China, America is the biggest threat. However, the mistrust exists, not only because the Indian parliament and defense establishment has concerns but because the CCP, or the PLA take an aggressive approach. Example being the aggressive patrolling by the PLA on the border.
None the less, soft diplomacy is key. the CCP is short allies and too many neighbors they pissed off and unlike India's poor neighbors these nations are pretty tough opponents. IMO the CCP sees a mirror in India that has the same goals. India wants to be a regional power in South Asia, and the IOR, while China wants to accomplish this in the far east and Pacific Ocean. It will be interesting to see this develop.

Also, most importantly, the CCP has a lot more crooks than the Indian parliament especially since the Congress goons have lost epically recently. The CCPs lack of transparency is what makes relations difficult. Worth noting, even though they are close to each, other, Asia is big enough for both their hegemony for the most part. So any escalation of war is unlikely.

The rhetoric from Dehli is BS. Is Kolkatta poker they are playing. Its a bluff when they say they are arming because China has nukes or this. India never needed submarine nuke detterent for China. Missiles with a range of 5000 km? some suspect even more, and DRDO admitted the missiles will have more range. This is not for China. This is for the US!
The US is the biggest player in the Indian ocean. Not China. The USN needs to leave IOR and they will not leave quietly and most likely will assert their dominance here for a long time! While Pakistan is wild card, its a known threat. But the US is a nation that can destroy India within a month! Imagine if they bombed India like Iraq? You think India can do any thing about it?
Relations may be good, but one must not forget the support of Pakistan in 1965 war, and then in 1971!
Long term strategic objective is to keep the US in check.
Weapons as examples.
Agni 3/4/5 etc... submarine launched BM.
Barhmos, over kill for a Chinese fleet, but for the USN necessary.
Long range antiship BM under development.
Nuclear submarines.
BMD-for every other nuclear state.
Pak-Fa
Su-30 MKI- long range aircraft that can patrol the IOR and attack USN fleet among other things.
