India, Mongolia Conduct Joint Military Exercises

K.V. Prasad

NEW DELHI: The troops of India and Mongolia engaged in joint exercises, with the latest two-week drill in counter-insurgency ending in Belgaum on Sunday.

Nearly 30 officers and personnel of the Mongolian armed forces participated in the workout called “Nomadic Elephant” along with 50 officers and personnel of the Indian Army in counter-terrorism environment.

The current engagement tapered and ended around the time the Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao was in India and Pakistan.

Steady growth

Defence cooperation and relations between the militaries of the two countries has seen a steady growth over the last decade with the first joint exercise in 2004. For the last few years, the joint drills are being held every year.

In recent years, the exercises varied with the one in 2005 being held at the Counter Insurgency and Jungle Warfare School at Vairnagte, Mizoram while another exercise held in Mongolia in September 2008 was on peacekeeping operations.

Top meetings

Besides exercises, both countries have had visits of top brass with the former Vice-Chief of the Army Staff Lt. Gen. Noble Thamburaj visiting Mongolia last year on the Mongolian armed forces day while its Chief of the Army Staff visited the Defence Expo here.

Mongolian Defence Minister L. Bold was one of the dignitaries at the 2009 Aero India and also took part in the Joint Working Group meeting.

We should probably build an airforce academy for Mongolia just like we"re building one for Laos.

.
We need to expand our footprint in Central asia this is a good step I hope in 2011 our PM starts visiting such countries in that region to further enhance ties.

Mongolia isn't exactly the gate-way to Central-Asia.

I think by initiating this games India had attracted the wrath of China's new military strategist and King of the kings who is roaming everywhere promising each and every India's to b felicitated as Maharaja.

Thats true its in the middle of no where but it's still the land of the great Genghis Khan I seen a video on the Naadam festival which includes horse racing, archery, and Mongolian wrestling I bet those Mongolian soldiers are as tough as nails

hope India did a good job at this and passing out parade wasn't something like the pic below.

Mongolian neo-Nazi group the Tsagaan Khas ('White Swastika') salute on the streets of the capital Ulan Bator Photograph: Dan Chung for the Guardian

Their right hands rise to black-clad chests and flash out in salute to their nation: "Sieg heil!" They praise Hitler's devotion to ethnic purity.

But with their high cheekbones, dark eyes and brown skin, they are hardly the Third Reich's Aryan ideal. A new strain of Nazism has found an unlikely home: Mongolia.

Once again, ultra-nationalists have emerged from an impoverished economy and turned upon outsiders. This time the main targets come from China, the rising power to the south.

typical indian contradictions.

one minute they are peaceful people who just want economic progress, multi polar world, friendship with everyone and other such seemingly laudable goals

next minute talking about creating a global empire like imperialists.

the same sort of imperialists who have dominated india's history and indians are quick to moan about.

ofcourse pakistani's are just not as advanced as the indians to comprehend such a gaping contradiction :blah::rofl:

Wait, Mangolia is mainly in Russia's influence right? Then this isnt a surprise.

Its a landlocked country and will invite everyone,so each one can offset the influence of the other and Mongolia makes the most of it.

PM's recent visit to Japan and South Korea had been a new era in defence and strategic cooperation. Ties with Singapore, Vietnam have also improved a lot in recent years. Relation with other south east Asian countries are also good. Now Mongolia has an important position in our look east policy. Its good to see that military cooperation also improving.
