World crude steel production increased 5.6% to 141.4 million tonnes in September from a year earlier. India, which is tipped to topple Japan and emerge as the second-largest global steel producer, produced 8.2 million tonnes of the alloy last month, up 1.9%. China, the world’s largest steel producer, accounted for more than half of the month’s global output, producing 71.8 million tonnes, an increase of 5.3%. Japan’s output rose 2% to 8.6 million tonnes. India produced 75.2 million tonnes of steel in the first nine months of 2017, up 5.7% from the same period last year, the World Steel Association said in a report collating production data for 66 countries. Japan’s output in the nine-month period went down marginally by 0.2% to 78.2 million tonnes. World crude steel production so far this year was up 5.6% to 1,266.9 million tonnes. Moderate but continued growth is expected for global steel demand, according to the association’s short-range outlook released earlier this month.
