The Jawaharlal Nehru and Kandla port trusts are in discussion with the government of Iran for operating a multi-purpose terminal at the port of Chabahar on the Gulf of Oman, near Iran’s border with Pakistan.

JNPT, the country’s largest container port at Navi Mumbai, and Kandla in Gujarat’s Kutch, the largest port by total cargo, will come together to form a Special Purpose Vehicle to operate the terminal at Chabahar, under a revenue-share agreement with the Port and Maritime Organisation, Iran.

The agreement would be for a minimum of 20 years.

The two major ports are likely to seek financial assistance from the external affairs ministry to operate Chabahar, of strategic interest to India for decades.

The union shipping ministry finds the project financially unviable and, therefore, wants the external affairs ministry – which is piloting the project — to provide a one-time capital grant and an annual grant to make the project sustainable.

“We are in the process of formulating a cabinet note asking for a grant, since it has to make financial sense for the Indian ports to invest in the terminal.

“The final decision in this matter has to be taken by the external affairs ministry,” a senior government official said.

Experts said Chabahar’s economic potential cannot be estimated in the short run and can be done only after a certain time frame.

The estimated project cost is around $100 million. The port project has been delayed because of various reasons, including the US and European Union sanctions on Iran because of its nuclear programme.

It is believed Chabahar would give India an unprecedented geopolitical network.

Because of its strategic location near the landlocked countries of Afghanistan and Turkmenistan, India would get road access to these countries.

“This project could give us access to the Turkmenistan and Iran pipeline, since India could operate the LNG terminal at Chabahar.

“We can also readily approach Central Asia and not be blocked by Pakistan,” said Talmiz Ahmed, former ambassador to the United Arab Emirates. The Gwadar port in Balochistan, Pakistan, in the vicinity of Chabahar, was taken over by China, making Chabahar a strategically important location for India.

so,it'll cost India about $300 mil in this Chahbahar Port.$100 mil for development of thsi port,$100 mil for operating a multi purpose terminal,and $100 mil for developing a road linking Chahbahar with Western Afghanistan by building a 220-km road.

there was talks in early may that we'd sign the MOU on Chahbahar port within 2 weeks.don't know if it got signed or not.

I think t would be more interesting to see how Pakistan behaves than China.

Profits, of course. Also, a trade route to the energy rich central asian regionand afghanistan.
How will they link it to India. There is no road link for Indian market to expand thier operations to central Asian countries.

It's a port - that means it is for sea trade. The road will be built from Iran to Afgh and other CAR countries. Goods from India will be shipped to Iran, then transported on road. Similarly goods from those countries will be shipped to India. Besides, India will invest in and operate the port, so will earn a lot of profit from whatever trade Iran wishes to do from there. Remember, those are very busy shipping lanes.

The key to India's strategy in Afghanistan is to build transportation links that bypass Pakistan, thereby reducing Afghanistan's economic dependence on Pakistan and at the same time step-up bilateral trade with Afghanistan.

This would also increase trade links with Central Asian Republics (CARs) through Afghanistan and Iran. The Indian Border Roads Organisation has constructed a major road in 2009, connecting Delaram on the Afghan ring highway with Zaranj, the capital of province of Nimroz, which borders Iran. This completed the linking of Chabahar port to the Kandahar-Herat highway.

In addition, Iran, India and Oman are preparing to begin official negotiations for delivery of Iranian natural gas to the Indian market through a deep-water pipeline, completely bypassing the land route via Pakistan which was not considered feasible due to security concerns of all three countries.

India’s South Asia Gas Enterprise Pvt. Ltd. (SAGE) has conducted feasibility studies for the planned 1,400-kilometer pipeline, which is estimated to cost $5 billion and would carry 31 million cubic meters per day of gas to India.

I am hearing this for last 5 years. chinese have already buit gwadar port in meantime.

India is very slow in this type of development but the good thing is that they complete what they start :) but it take more time then estimated every time :hitwall:
