India: Kerala’s Muslim organisation to set up 100 schools in Uttar Pradesh

in modern times, i find very less muslim ladies in films and on tv... a few like huma qureshi in films and few like shafaq naaz on tv...

The Indian Bollywood films show too much skin from the perspective of conservative Muslim families. In India, girls wear shorts and skirts while the Indian Muslims girls wear modest clothes. There are so many Pakistan television actresses and announcers on TV channels. The Pakistani serials are also popular in India giving break from Saas-Bahu masala soap operas.

showing skin was never issue for zeenat or parveen... and I would consider their movies as more titilating/provocative than current bollywood movies..
I think its because lot of hindu girls also dont have issues with being in bollywood which means more competition for muslim girls.. also earlier big production house used to be owned by muslims, not anymore.

While in Pakistan the girls have started to wear Hijab in last 25 years. The Burqa is wore only in the Pashtun tribal areas.
I would call it the "middle-east effect". In the recent past a lot of muslims(from India) 've moved to middle east, so it was inevitable that they would emulate whatever they saw in the middle-east.
Unfortunately burqa is not an apt attire for the Indian subcontinental climate and also it doesn't serve its purpose in India. The intent of the burqa is to draw attention away from the woman, but in the India (where muslims 're a minority) it only attracts unwanted attention.

Let me tell you not all short dresses look provocative. A girl with spaghetti strap would look fine in gym but not in a wedding. And it also depends on how well it is carried by the girl who wears it.

I think that Parveen Bobby and Zeenat Aman were exceptions. I think new conservatism started, at least in Pakistan, after 1973 oil price hike, migration of millions of Pakistanis to Persian Gulf and Saudi Arabia and Iranian revolution in 1979. The proliferation of cable TV also showed Muslim women wearing Hijabs in Middle East. The Hijab slowly became more popular especially among young educated women.

You see many Bollywood Indian Muslim male actors adopting 'Khan; surname while there very few Muslim female actresses. Since Muslim girls don't want to ostracized for semi-nudity while many non-Muslim Indian girls wear skirts and shorts in real life too. Amitabh Bacchan also did not encourage/allow her daughter to became an actress.

while the Indian Muslims girls wear modest clothes.

like i said, the burqa-fication of india ( and the world ) is very recent... the creation of the tableeghi fools.

but thankfully, there are sensible ladies in india like shafaq and of course, huma qureshi... :D

I was talking about movies they acted in and the characters they played.. there was surely much more titilation those days... things turned bad to worse when prem chopra came along and all middle aged men started to get kick out of rape scenes.
Current bollywood is infinitely better..even with more skin on show in some movies, I dont see why people would watch them for sexual gratification, a lot of them are done in tasteful way.
Either that, or I consume too much pr0n. :coffee:

I would call it the "middle-east effect".

the burqa is irani in origin... west asia and north africa did not know the burqa... so burqa is not "middle eastern" but south asian ( i and even uno include iran in south asia ).

The intent of the burqa is to draw attention away from the woman,

yes, and therefore burqa is a crime against the females and the males... it seeks to remove the female from society and turn the male into a female-hating creature who does not think much... which is why the taliban are hardly examples of human compassion and justice and progress.

Current bollywood is infinitely better

but i dislike the forced inclusion of songs that are unnecessary... and i dislike stupid films like "mardaani".

I thought Iran was a part of middle east.

I've lots to say on this topic but I'll save that for another day as we're way off topic. :)

In the agriculture societies both men and women work in fields and shepherding. The non-agriculture societies have more traditions of veils. Many society had tradition of veils for royal and noble women.

@ArsalanKhan21 acting with another male during BW period is equivalent to being semi nude now... the muslim ladies were certainly bold to join movies... during a time when men used to do female roles in drama by doing some makeup and wearing saree.

but yes hindu society has become increasingly progressive which means actress are not considered prostitutes anymore.. there might be some truth in muslim society going bit backward.. but I would think competition from majority community being a bigger factor, and lack of opportunity. THere is a reason why awful lot of kapoors in bollywood.

i disagree... haryana state in india is largely a rural or agricultural place, yet has a veil culture, and is a extremely backward place, filled with "honor killing", oppression and female infanticide.

west asian and north african societies were not agricultural largely, yet they did not have the veil..

look at china or japan... do they have the ghoonghat, dupatta or burqa??

.
yes!

what you said about burqa is true.
Not many women used to wear it long back, the trend started very recently.

Exactly ..And these enlightenment started just after the 9/11.Wahhabism that was whirling around in Saudi for a long time just blown out after that event.
Perhaps you might know all of those in 9/11 attack was Saudi citizens.
