Big Diplomatic Win As India Joins Australia Group for Controlling Chemical & Biological Weapons
China for the longest time has been blocking India's entry into the elite Nuclear Suppliers' Group (NSG) saying that India had not signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). India's entry into the Australian Group pushes its case for the NSG.

New Delhi: In a major diplomatic achievement, India has officially joined the Australia Group (AG), an official release said on Thursday. The development comes close to the heels of India joining the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) and Waasenaar. The AG aims to ensure that exports in no way contribute to acquisition or development of chemical and biological weapons.

"There was a very strong support expressed for India's membership at the 26-30 June 2017 Australia Group Plenary, after which consensus was reached intersessionally. India then reaffirmed its intention to join the Group,” the AG said in an official statement. In response to its admission, the ministry of external affairs on Thursday said that "India's entry into the Group would be mutually beneficial and further contribute to international security and non-proliferation objectives."

The other AG members include Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Canada, Spain among others. India joined the MTCR two years ago in 2016 and the Waasenaar Agreement in 2017.

India is now the 43rd participant in the group. India's entry into the AG pushes its case for the Nuclear Suppliers' Group. China for the longest time has been blocking India's entry into the elite NSG saying that India had not signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). China continued to cause hindrance in India's entry despite US, along with other countries, backing India as a responsible 'nuclear' country. Interestingly, India, however, got into the MCT and Waasenaar without signing the NPT. Its recent entry into AG is expected to push its case for NSG membership further.http://www.news18.com/news/india/bi...ling-chemical-biological-weapons-1636825.html
