NEW DELHI: India has issued demarches to both Pakistan and China conveying its position on construction of dams on the Indus river in Azad Jammu Kashmir (AJK) by the Pakistani government with assistance committed to these projects by China, the government said today.

Replying to a written question in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for External Affairs V K Singh said India has a clear and consistent position that these territories are illegally occupied by Pakistan and that any collaborative activity there is in violation of India's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

"Accordingly, we have made demarches to both Pakistan and China conveying the position. The government continues to maintain this position," Singh said.

Replying to a separate question on China's 'One Belt One Road' (OBOR) initiative, Singh said the government has clearly articulated its firm belief that connectivity initiatives must be "based on universally recognised international norms, good governance, rule of law...and must be pursued in a manner that respects sovereignty and territorial integrity".

He also asserted that the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPECBSE -4.45 %), which is being projected as a flagship project of OBOR initiative, passes through parts of the presumed Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir which has been in illegal occupation of Pakistan since 1947.

"The government has conveyed to the Chinese side, including at the highest level, its concerns about China's activities in AJK and asked them to cease these activities," the minister added

India has also strongly conveyed its position at multilateral and international fora where issues related to OBOR/CPEC have been raised.

Recently, Russia asked India to find a way out to join OBOR without compromising on its position.

Responding to yet another question, Singh said in view of the significance of the Sino-India relationship, both sides are working towards utilising their bilateral dialogue mechanisms to promote mutually beneficial cooperation, and enhancing communication at all levels in order to build greater trust and understanding.

He also said that both India and China agree that the progress in bilateral relations should be guided by the consensus reached between their leaders, and that at a time of global uncertainty, India-China relations are a factor of stability and the two countries, in their relationship, must not allow differences to become disputes.

India back to it old policies of conveying messages to Pakistan and China lol. The Indian minister is a liar no one from India said any thing to Pakistan about Dams in AJK.

I don't understand one thing Pakistan already has Dams in AJK and UN has already allowed Pakistan to build as many Dams as Pakistan can under Indus water treaty. How can India even stop Pakistan from building Dams. Puff stupid politicians.

Why should we speak about it every one knows Kashmir is part of Pakistan entire world has recognized it. This is what India want to get Pakistan in an argument they have nothing to back their claim. India cannot handle IOK currently.

Actually India has no valid objection on CPEC so they use these statements for their domestic consumption. Now this minister has conveyed no message to Pakistan there is no news about India conveying any message to Pakistan yet he telling the reporters that we have conveyed the message lol.

You want to build a dam there, build it using your own money. We can't allow foreign investment into disputed territory.

In case we go to war in the future and we take back the territory, the ownership of the dam will also move to us. But it will become a headache if a foreign country is also involved.

Are you telling us that you are the single person manning the Pakistan Ministry of External Affairs? Do you understand the formality and gravity of a demarche?

You are not going to allow foreign investment into AJK? You mean we need your permission?

Where was all this hubris when Karakoram highway was getting built, when various other dams were getting built in AJK? All those had foreign investment involved. This "foreign investment in AJK" appears to be another novel excuse by the bharati establishment to oppose CPEC, when in reality it just wants CPEC to go away completely and turn the clock on it. The excuse is as BS as it gets, since foreign investment has been coming into AJK for a long, long time. Let's just call a spade a spade. Bharat wants CPEC to go away and this is their cover story to antagonize CPEC.

Since India is an illegitimate country prolonging British imperialism, no need to communicate with that hell hole.

When those dams were built, it was with India's approval. In fact India facilitated the construction of Mangla and Tarbela dams through IWT.

Look at our neighbours. One country belongs to an army and another belongs to a party.

You should be concerning about India split into many little pieces.

People have been wishing that for a long time now even if the trend has been the opposite.

You got it. Surely China will stop funding for CPEC because South Korea did, or because Bharat wants it to. Right?

China may not, but other countries will. That's pretty much all other countries.

Mangla dam? Karakoram highway?

Mangla Dam was also part of IWT. Karakoram Highway is only a road.

The same reason we gave for the F-16s also. You want it, pay for it yourself.

Btw, foreign banks don't want to fund the dam either. Both World Bank and ADB refused to fund the dam.
