মঙ্গলবার রমনা কালীমন্দিরের উন্নয়ন কাজ পরিদর্শনে এসে এমনই জানালেন বাংলাদেশে নিযুক্ত ভারতের হাইকমিশনার রিভা গঙ্গোপাধ্যায় দাশ। তিনি বলেন, ১৯৭১ সালে ২৬ মার্চ ঐতিহাসিক এই মন্দিরটি পাক বাহিনী ধ্বংস করেছিল। সেদিন রাতে ট্যাংক বহর নিয়ে মন্দিরটি ঘিরে ফেলে পাক হানাদার বাহিনী। এরপর তা ডিনামাইট দিয়ে উড়িয়ে দেওয়া হয়। হত্যা করা হয় মন্দিরের পুজারী-সহ শতাধিক ব্যক্তিকে।

বাংলাদেশের স্বাধীনতা ইতিহাসের সঙ্গেও রমনা কানীমন্দিরের নাম জড়িয়ে রয়েছে। ১৯৭১ সালের ৭ মার্চ বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানের ঐতিহাসিক ভাষণ এবং ৯ মাস মুক্তিযুদ্ধের পরে পরাজিত পাকবাহিনীর আত্মসমর্পনও অনুষ্ঠিত হয়েছিল রমনা রেসকোর্স ময়দানেই। ভারতের তৎকালীন প্রধানমন্ত্রী ইন্দিরা গান্ধী স্বাধীন বাংলাদেশে সফরে এসে একই স্থানে মুজিব-ইন্দিরা মঞ্চে বাংলার মানুষের উদ্দেশে ভাষণ দিয়েছিলেন। পরবর্তীকালে বঙ্গবন্ধু পাকিস্তানের কারাগার থেকে মুক্তিলাভ করে ঢাকায় পৌঁছে ছুটে আসেন রমনা রেসকোর্স ময়দানেই।
১৯৭৫ সালের ১৫ অগস্ট বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানকে সপরিবারে হত্যার পরে দীর্ঘ সময় পেরিয়ে গেলেও কোনও সরকার রমনা কালীমন্দির পুনরনির্মাণের উদ্যোগ নেয়নি। শেখ হাসিনা ক্ষমতায় আসার পরে রমনা কালীমন্দিরকে ২.২৬ একর জমি দান করা ছাড়াও অন্যান্য সহযোগিতা করেন।
