India is 73rd in women’s participation in politics
| Mar 17, 2014,
LONDON: The Women in Politics Map 2014 launched by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and UN Women has ranked India 73rd in participation of women in politics with just 9.9% of parliamentary or ministerial posts being occupied by women.
India ranks below countries like Haiti, Rwanda, Congo, Chad and Zambia.
The map shows that out of the 43 ministers in India, only 4 are women. Around 88 parliaments out of 188 in total have women deputy speakers, the map said.
Pakistan was ranked below India. In fact, Pakistan is among a handful of countries which does not have a single female minister (0 out of 17 ministers in the cabinet) and joins countries like Saudi Arabia and Lebanon at the bottom.
In the UK, nearly 20% of the ministerial posts are occupied by women while in the US it is 40%.
The map revealed similar regional trends in women's representation in both spheres with the Americas, Europe and Africa outperforming the Arab, Asia and Pacific regions. In executive government, the percentage of women in ministerial posts has now reached 17.2%, up from 16.1% in 2008.
