Indian army lacks the material and organization to implement its so-called Cold Start doctrine, a concept of imposing a limited war on Pakistan.

Commenting on Indian army chief’s reference in an interview to existence of the Cold Start strategy, Walter C. Ladwig III and Vipin Narang say in an article the large number of obsolete tanks and artillery pieces, not to mention critical shortages of ammunition and air-defence assets raises serious questions about the Indian’s army’s ability to implement a Cold Start-style operation.

The article published in The Hindu said there is no public evidence that India remotely has the capability to undertake a major cross border incursion.

It further says the Islamic Republic uses India’s Cold Start doctrine as a pretext for expansion of its conventional and nuclear forces.

“Not only does the Indian Air Force lack the kind of close air support capability Cold Start would require, but army-air force cooperation is also beset by inter-service dysfunction. This has put India in the worst possible strategic position: claiming a capability that it does not have, but which provides justification for Pakistan’s aggressive expansion of its conventional and nuclear forces. Such an approach has rarely served a nation’s security interests,” the article noted.

Western civilization by now should come to terms with this reality that their blind support to India to prop it as a only regional power against Pakistan is backfiring spectacularly.

India officially denies the CS doctrine.

This is a false statement.

Walter Ladwig has been well known in the circuit and have been writing papers on it since the early 2000s.

Cold Start is India implementation of Blitzkrieg but India is no Germany..and Indians cannot team work like Germans..to think that India can make a co-ordinated land, air and sea attack is more ridiculous than Bollywood fantasy!

To have a successful blitz war..one must have sufficient numbers of war ships, submarines and naval gear to neutralize enemy defenses in a brisk single swipe attack..followed with ground invasion by troops...Therefore...India needs already....

  1. Two capable naval fleets to destroy Pakistani sea ports and defenses to impose sea denial..
  2. Massive numbers of air planes to conduct simultaneous bombing runs against vital facilities..especially runways , airports and airfields.
  3. Mass number of troop transporters for ground invasion...land and air both...
  4. And ability to open land, air and sea fronts at the same time and manage them well....

It's sad that Indian strategists came up with a strategy without considering the inventory of its arsenals. What kind of crappy strategies is that. It's like an architect and structural engineer build a skyscraper without procure the necessary materials. But since India had trouble tell the difference between Venus and drone, I'm not too surprised.

Take it easy chap! You're getting hot under the collar as if india is about to attack Taiwan! It's China you should be worried about wrt to Taiwan. India is a friend to Taiwan.

Besides why all the overreaction over a "strategy" that does not exist?! I mean for all intents and purposes, Indian Army has vehemently denied the existence of any such posture or "strategy".
Funny that we have to listen to whining (or as our yellow livered neighbors would term randi rona) on a constant basis from Pakistanis and esteemed strategists like yourself over something non existant that was born and bred in the minds of Pakistanis!
Don't chew our ear out coz Pakistanis are scared of some imaginary boogeyman and insist that it's real!

Besides if one knows that india is not capable of it, why the million and one threads about the same, with over the top reactions nonetheless? Just ignore and move on, no?!

Pakistan has turned Cold Start into a Hot Mess.

That's right..the tea leaves for Pakistan now read "next stop delhi!"

So Cold Start is now a Pakistani doctrine? :omghaha::omghaha::omghaha:

I quote The Hindu, an Indian newspaper:

In a wide-ranging interview with India Today, the new Chief of Army Staff, General Bipin Rawat, appeared to drop a bombshell by acknowledging the existence of the army’s Cold Start strategy

It's obvious that India likes to brag. I'm sure cold start is a top secret official Indian military strategy that was leaked. But if Indian officers can't even keep a secret and take national security seriously, don't expect others not to pick apart India's exposed military doctrine.

Please have a read through the link...states quite clearly that no such thing exists..

It seems that Gen Rawat must have known that mere whisper of the cold start will have Pakistanis running around like headless chickens...and Pakistanis didn't dissapoint with their reactions either.

Keep building up that imaginary boogeyman, all we can do is watch the entertainment from the sidelines and enjoy the pop corn!

Love it!
A secret that never was, was "leaked"...and now it begs to question the credibility of the Indian army!
New twist to the story!

do PM/mass tag us Indians when you've crafted the next chapter of your whiny saga...I certainly don't wanna miss this!

With Nasr — a tactical ballistic missile, Next Stop... Hell. :omghaha::omghaha::omghaha:

Funny thing is that Pakistanis plan to use this on their own lands to stop an "impending invasion"...hell indeed!

It's like cutting your nose off to spite your face!
But hey, you guys never were a bright bunch to begin with...It's not your fault!

India may or may not have such a doctrine. Anyway it's not some super-novel tactic. Essentially a pre-emptive strike by conventional forces and such a plan should not come as a surprise to anybody familiar with the border, the likely strategies and the obvious military targets.

If there is such a doctrine it is plausible that some of the issues pointed out are accurate - such as lack of coordination with air force, shortages of ammunition, etc.

But this part at least is quite believable -

It further says the Islamic Republic uses India’s Cold Start doctrine as a pretext for expansion of its conventional and nuclear forces.
