India in aerospace defence plan

India says it is to build an aerospace defence command aimed at preventing possible attacks from space.
The head of India's air force outlined the plans saying it would protect both Indian territory and assets.

Air Chief Marshal Shashi Tyagi said India was an aerospace power with "trans-oceanic reach" and it was vital it should be able to exploit space.

It comes two weeks after China carried out a test in which it used a missile to destroy an old satellite in orbit.

Military command

In the wake of China's test, in which a ground-based medium-range ballistic missile was used to destroy a weather satellite, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called for a "weapons free outer space".

The demand was backed by Russian President Vladimir Putin during a recent visit to India.

We are an aerospace power having trans-oceanic reach and we have started training a core group of people for the aerospace command

Air Chief Marshal Tyagi
"The fundamental position of the Russian Federation is that outer space should be absolutely weapons free," Mr Putin told a joint press conference with Mr Singh in Delhi.

Military analysts say the Indian project would probably replicate the North American Aerospace Defence Command (Norad) set up by the United States and Canada, which detects and tracks man-made objects in space.

"As the reach of our air force is expanding it has become extremely important that we exploit space and for it you need space assets," Air Chief Marshal Tyagi said.

"We are an aerospace power having trans-oceanic reach and we have started training a core group of people for the aerospace command," he added.

He said civilian expertise would be used to be build the planned aerospace command, but that it would be under military command.

Last week India said it successfully tested the technology which ensures the safe return of astronauts from space after an orbiting capsule returned to Earth.

The capsule splashed down in the Bay of Bengal off the east coast after 11 days orbiting the earth, the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) said.

Neo I think its high time i start being a palmist :P
my predictions r all coming true , i have said manytimes here india building complex air defence systems.

but this bcc report are so much changed, god these bbc would do anything to make india seem anti-china.

Gandhinagar, PTI:

An aerospace command will be established soon to exploit outer space and to control space- based assets, Air Chief Marshal S P Tyagi said today.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is in the process of establishing this command by integrating its capabilities, he told reporters here.

Tyagi's remarks assume significance in the wake of reports that China successfully tested an anti-satellite missile.

"As the reach of the IAF is expanding, it has become extremely important that we exploit space and for it you need space assets," Tyagi, who is due to retire in March, said.

"We are an aerospace power having trans-oceanic reach.

We have started training a core group of people for the aerospace command." Tyagi, here to attend a station commanders' conference of the South Western Air Command, was non-committal on the exact timeframe for setting up the command.

"We will take help of ISRO for the aerospace command but it will have distinct features as it is a military command," Tyagi said in reply to a question on the role of the space agency in setting up the proposed formation.

The command will combine various components like satellites, radars, communications systems, and fighter aircraft and helicopters, IAF officers said.

This will be done while taking into consideration diverse needs like communciations, reconnaissance and battlefield damage assessment as the reach of the IAF has increased, they said.

To a question on China's military modernisation drive, Tyagi said, "They are ahead in some fields (in comparison to India) and in some fields we are ahead. That country has huge resources due to their rapid economic development." He said the role of IAF has changed with the times.

"The IAF needs to tranform itself to adapt to new requirements. Its basic role to protect airspace and borders of the country is still there, but we have to protect our global interests. We plan to have strategic reach to meet our needs of new strategic boundaries.

"We have drawn the roadmap for the transformation of the IAF and we are on the right track." Tyagi further said the IAF's interaction on a global scale has increased and it has done joint air exercises with several countries in recent times.

Speaking about accidents involving IAF aircraft, Tyagi said the percentage of such incidents has been considerably reduced.

"In relative terms, no other air force in the world has registered such a drop in the number of air accidents."

Actually, Media doesnt have any Idea about Defence and Keep on barking Whatever they want.

The Aerospace command was a proposal by the Airforce form a Long Time and its not related to about China Anti-Satellite Stuff. Another thing is that these Idiots had started Comparign it with the US Aero-Spoace Commond itself:wall:

This is what Happens when you dont have a Special Professional Media for Armed Forces. We can find more and more these kind of Mistakes.
