India 'human sacrifice' suspected in West Bengal temple

By Subir Bhaumik
BBC News, Calcutta

The severed head and torso of a man has been found in a temple in the Indian state of West Bengal in what the police say is a case of "human sacrifice".

The head and the body were found at the local temple to the goddess Kali near Chotomakdampur village in the western district of Birbhum.

Police say they have detained a tribal villager for questioning.

Human sacrifice is illegal in India. But a few cases do occur in remote and underdeveloped regions.

"This man has been sacrificed to propitiate the gods," said local official Kalyan Mukherjee.

"This is a shame for Bengal where the ruling Left coalition claim they have eradicated social evils and combated superstition," an opposition leader Samir Kumar Ray said.

Though human sacrifice has long been banned in India, some people, mostly the poor and illiterate, fall under the influence of "witch doctors" in the hope of reversing their fortunes.

The police in West Bengal State said Friday that they were investigating a possible case of human sacrifice after finding the naked, beheaded body of a man in a temple for the Hindu goddess Kali in Donaipur. “There were marks of injury on the severed head, which was smeared with red vermilion,” said Rabindranath Mukherjee, the district police superintendent. “Flowers, mainly marigolds, and incense sticks were scattered beside the body.”

India temple beheading human sacrifice?

CALCUTTA, India, April 16 (UPI) -- The body of a beheaded man has been found in a West Bengal, India, temple in what some locals say appears to be a case of human sacrifice.

Police say they discovered the head and body of the victim, a middle-aged man, near a wooden block where goats are sacrificed in a temple to the goddess Kali near Chotomakdampur village in the western district of Birbhum, the BBC reported.

A villager was detained for questioning but a police official cast doubt on whether the killing was a human sacrifice, The Calcutta Telegraph reported.

"Investigations so far point towards a murder. We think it was made to look like a human sacrifice to mislead us," said Rabindranath Mukherjee, the district police superintendent.

A police officer told the newspaper investigators were trying to determine if the blood found near the base of the wooden block in the temple was that of the man or sacrificed goats.

Some villagers insisted it was a human sacrifice. "This man has been sacrificed to propitiate the gods," local official Kalyan Mukherjee said, the BBC reported.

India long ago outlawed human sacrifice, but the practice persists in some remote and underdeveloped areas under the influence of "witch doctors."

"This is a shame for Bengal, where the ruling Left coalition claim they have eradicated social evils and combated superstition," opposition leader Samir Kumar Ray said, the Telegraph reported.

It is not a Hindu Ritual, its superstition.

If you go to West Bengal to Assam you will find such thing...this is nothing to do with Hindu religion,it comes under black magic....superstition is there in every religion.

Priest 'makes human sacrifice'

Mahesh Pandey
BBC correspondent in Bhopal

Police have arrested a village priest in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh for allegedly carrying out a human sacrifice.

The priest, Chandrabhan Singh Lodhi, is accused of sacrificing a low caste Hindu, or Dalit, to please the village goddess in Parsari village of Sagar district.

Human sacrifice is illegal in India.

But a few cases do come to light in socially and economically-backward regions.

Head cut off

According to the police the priest, Chandrbhan Singh Lodhi, and the man he sacrificed, Alam Ahrirwar, had been searching for hidden treasure for a long time.

Lodhi told the police that on Saturday that the two had performed a lengthy ritual to appease the local goddess.

As Alam Ahirwar bowed his head to pay his respect to the deity, Lodhi cut his head off with a sword, the police say - all in the hope of discovering the hidden treasure.

Mr Ahirwar's body was later recovered from a railway track.

Police have registered a case of murder against Lodhi under the Indian Penal Code.

Reports say 55-years-old, Ahirwar, was a regular visitor to the temple and Lodhi often performed black magic on him.

He is believed to have told his family members not to tell anyone his whereabouts, before he left for the temple on Saturday.

Though human sacrifice has long been banned in India, some people, mostly the poor and illiterate - fall under the influence of witch doctors and black magicians in the hope of reversing their fortunes.

West Bengal tribesmen kill 'witches'

By Subir Bhaumik
BBC correspondent in Calcutta

Five women have been killed in India's West Bengal state by local tribesmen who believed they were witches.

Police said the tribesmen admitted responsibility for the killings but said a local priest had told them to do it.

The priest reportedly told them the women were witches who had caused a spate of recent deaths in the area from malaria and diarrhoea.

Police said they had so far recovered only two of the five bodies.

The killing of women suspected of being witches is a frequent phenomenon in parts of eastern and central India

The police superintendent of Jalpaiguri district, Siddhinath Gupta, told the BBC that the five women were kidnapped near the district's Kilkot tea plantation two days ago.

Police later arrested ten members of the Oraon tribe.

Mr Gupta said that the mutilated bodies of two women had been recovered from an island on the river Murti and the police were looking for the other three.

Womens rights groups say that local priests, tribal chiefs or greedy relatives declare widows or divorcees witches so they can take control of their property.

to please the gods.
Black magic.

Its done in temples, graveyards, etc etc.

The person performing the ritual believes if he pleases the gods, gods would help him achieve whatever he wants to.

Pure BS but it happens, not only in India but all over the world.
