Population density is worthless in measuring the development of a nation-state.

Sure, it will give you some measure as to the carrying capacity and potential for food exports (or imports), but it won't say anything about how prosperous a country is or will be.

Japan is clearly one of the worst in the metric you outlined above, yet is also one of the most prosperous countries in the world. Same with Singapore, Iceland, Korea, Taiwan, Netherlands, and Switzerland, just to name a few.

It's easy to say that there is no correlation between development and population density.
 
Of course India has a lower population density than China. 1/3 of China is a barren desert. Large chucks are too mountainous.
