Washington: India and Greece are working on a strategic partnership and the two nations have agreed to enhance their co-operation on counter-terrorism and piracy in the Indian Ocean, officials said.

In a meeting here last week on the sidelines of the annual meeting of the IMF and the World Bank, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and his Greece counterpart Evangelos Venizelos discussed a wide range of bilateral and global issues including the current economic crisis in Europe.

There is a great deal of understanding between the two countries which gives a solid base to work towards a Strategic Partnership based on shared values of democratic governance, rule of law and convergence of common interests, Mukherjee is understood to have told Venizelos.

It is believed that the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs is currently preparing a draft Strategic Partnership Agreement which would soon be forwarded to India.

Strategically located in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Balkans, Greece is an active member of NATO and EU and influential player in the region.

It sees India as a factor of stability in the region and a rising global power fit to be a permanent member of an expanded UNSC with which it seeks greater interaction, officials said.

Informing the steps being taken by India in its fight against terrorism, Mukherjee is understood to have told Venizelos that New Delhi is committed to full implementation of the UN Counter-Terrorism regime including the Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy as well as counter-terrorism conventions.

It is important to conclude the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism to strengthen the international legal framework against terrorism, Mukherjee said, adding that the two countries must work towards the early conclusion of this Convention.

Notably, the Indian Navy is extending cooperation to Greek Merchant vessels which have been a target of maritime pirates in the Indian Ocean.

Greece, in fact, is also a victim of home-grown terrorism and fears international terrorism entering its borders.

Venizelos is understood to have briefed Mukherjee on the reform process in Greece about the structural reforms being undertaken tackle the sovereign debt crisis.

Greece has been undertaking comprehensive economic reforms which have adversely affected all sections of its society, especially the middle and the low income groups.

Mukherjee is believed to have told Venizelos that the two countries share warm political relations and a deep commitment to our common values of democracy, freedom and rule of law. He appreciated Greece's support for India's membership of the UN Security Council, both in the permanent and non-permanent category and for Greece's recent support for the G4 short resolution on UNSC reforms.

India works with doomed countries like Greece which economy is completely destroyed. No one wants any relationship with them.

Thats a Hellenic news..

Can we see some type 214s?

thats good but we don't need Greece unless they are helping us in our shipping industry...

But it's indeed kind of strange news, I would have expected some financial support, but not any defence related ties. Greece is going down, there is no doubt about it and the way too inflated military have to be reduced big times. No idea how MoD thinks they could be useful in counter-terrorism and piracy in the Indian Ocean. I don't think this is more than a good will gesture to them.

This kind of mentality is flawed. How do you think super powers are born? Alienating everyone on the planet? Building partnerships with all possible is intelligent and logical. In early 1990s India was in a TERRIBLE fincacial state, with the work of MMS look at her now, who knows what the future holds? Making friendships now, regardless of the current situation, ensures a good future.

ignore this low life idiot troll.... and what gives you a right to talk about a destroyed economy? look at yours then talk.

@topic good job the more countries we get on our side the better but i hope this does not affect our relations with Turkey.

I think India is going to become the saviors of western and european economy lol

.
^^I said it before i say it again....we dont need to be the bloddy saviors.

Let Greece default like Argentina .. They have literally no exports ...they need to improve there exports or they have no chance of recovery...

India would do well to stay clear of this black hole..

On toipic---> if its only about defense cooperation well and good ..keep it there

Nice try , troll ....

On the contrary , now is a good time to engage and gain trust of these countries.

China is on a EU-debt buying spree :

NOTE: India is engaging strategically , not economically.

I think we could utilize Greek expertise on ship building industry here very well. Despite their crumbling economy, Greece has a good knowledge of ship-making. We must utilize that and let mutually gain good benefits. This won't be the first time we're stepping up relations with them. It has happened for thousands of years between us.

We don't need to be Greece's saviour since we cannot with our limited economy; but at least we can mutually trade in military designs. Say if we could iron out some of our doubts with them on ship-making in return for some billions (as a norm in arms selling industry), it would contribute to their sagging economy as well as be a bonus for our naval might, isn't it? Great going for once, GOI. Had you not ruined the mood by supporting the not-needed palestinian situation, this could have been doubly clever.

They have one of the best shipping industries but again not naval. I also don't know whats going on. May be they have naval shipbuilding capabilities but they don't use it much because they don't need it and there they might be interested in helping us or US has asked us to help Greece in anyways possible.
