NEW DELHI: India is all set to roll out the red carpet and sign a slew of strategic pacts with Jordan during the visit of King Abdullah II from February 27, as the Narendra Modi government is keen to woo the Arab nation that has traditionally been a Pakistan ally.

Abdullah had accorded special honour to Prime Minister Modi at Amman two weeks ago, welcoming him personally at his palace and arranging a helicopter to take the PM to Ramallah.

Defence, security and investments will figure large on the bilateral agenda, while Modi and Abdullah are expected to jointly address a counter-terror and deradicalisation meet.

New Delhi is expected to make the king’s visit special as it has given special attention to Jordan of late, which that nation has reciprocated.

Amman is not only a harbinger of stability in a volatile region and also a key player in the Palestinian question, being among the few Muslim majority countries having diplomatic ties with Israel.

King Abdullah is popular locally and internationally for maintaining Jordanian stability and is known for promoting interfaith dialogue. The third longest serving Arab leader, he was regarded by the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Center as the most influential Muslim in the world in 2016. Abdullah is the custodian of Muslim sites — Ak Aqsa — in Jerusalem. His country is also home to significant number of Palestinian refugees.

Jordan also plays an important role in India's food security through provision of fertilisers and phosphates. Indian investors have taken advantage of Jordan's free trade agreements with the US and are trying to make it a hub of textile exports.

India is Jordan’s fourth largest trade partner after Iraq, Saudi Arabia and China. As of January 2016, Indians owned around 25 textile mills in qualified industrial zones (QIZs) in Jordan at a total investment of $300 million.
