India, France to launch satellite
India will partner France to launch a satellite which will monitor changes in sea level waters, according to the Minister of State for Science and Technology Prithviraj Chavan.
Chavan said on Wednesday that the space agencies of the two countries will collaborate in the project. The satellite, Saral will carry on board, an altimetre (ALTIKA) for recording heights in sea surface and the satellite data collection platform called ARGOS.
"The project is a joint project of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and the French National Space Agency (FNSA). The ALTIKA and ARGOS payloads are built and supplied by the French space agency. The satellite building and launching are the responsibilities of ISRO," he said.
The satellite with the with ARGOS and ALTIKA payloads is expected to be launched in 2011. He further said that the satellite in under fabrication at ISRO and the FNSA is integrating and testing the payloads.
Meanwhile in another project, ISRO is working on a navigation system called Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS). The project will have a constellation of seven satellites and supporting ground infrastructure.
The IRNSS project has been approved by the Government at a cost of Rs. 1420 crores in May 2006 and the system will be and operation by the end of 2014, Chavan informed the Lok Sabha in a written reply to a question today.
