India & France to develop Short–Range Surface–to–Air Missile

India and France on Thursday addressed military contracts and civil nuclear safety in a conference between External Affairs Minister S.M Krishan and visiting counterpart, Alain Juppe.

France has won a multi–billion contract for installing nuclear power plants in Western India, decided to fasten co-operation between the civil nuclear regulatory boards of the two countries.

On the Defense side, the two sides highlighted the joint development of a short-range missile which will be applied as the final solution for protecting vital installations from air invasions. They went ahead talking about the induction of French technology for the Kavari engine, which was being locally made but facing many challenges.

The period when this meeting took place fell coincidentally to the time when the two armies got involved with Shakti drills – for the first time. The terrestrial war games add to the usual held joint naval drills which is under the ‘Varuna’ and ‘Ganuda’ series by the two air forces.

India and France also approved the agreement to improve on the IAF Mirage 2000 aircraft. The Rs. 11000–Crore deal for the improvement was signed jointly by Dassult Aviation and Thales not too long ago.

The IAF possess 51 Mirage 2000s in its stock, acquired in the 1980s, and improvement plans include multimode Doppler radar, modern glass cockpit, fully integrated electronic warfare suite and beyond visual range missiles.

Both Ministers have acknowledged the ongoing bid to conclude on the joint defense research and development both for the Kaveri and Short–Range Surface–to–Air Missile (SR–SAM). The DRDO desires to jointly develop SR-SAM after the experience gained from the Trishul missile.

Yeah they are building this from 2007-08. Its not a new news. The project, with a budget of US$500 million was said to have been signed in May 2007.
DRDO, MBDA to Jointly Develop Maitri Quick Reaction Missile | India Defence

Read the information below...

The Maitri SAM will be build by MBDA and DRDO. Last i heard a lot of work has already been done but no official contract is signed yet between two countries and thats what MBDA and DRDO are waiting for.

The Maitri missile project is a next-generation Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM) with a lethal hundred per cent kill probability. It is a short-range (15km,9.3mi) surface-to-air point defense missile system.

It should not be confused with the similar Indian Army Low-Level Quick Reaction Missile system (LLQRM) requirement. The missile will fill the gap created by the Indian government's decision to wind up development of the Trishul point defense missile system. It is believed to be a blend of the French Mica and DRDO Trishul.

MBDA principal contribution will be in providing be the active homing-head, thrust vector control, terminal guidance system and composites for a modified propulsion system for the missile, while the software, command-and-control system, the launchers and system integration work would be carried out by the DRDL.

MBDA have agreed to transfer all “sensitive” technology such as the seeker and thrust vector control system to India allowing India to manufacture the Maitri missile locally as well as support them.

Two variants of the missile are planned :
A ship-borne point and tactical air defense version for the Navy
A mobile wheeled and tracked system for use by the Air Force and Army

The Electronics & Radar Development Establishment (LRDE), Bangalore, would develop two indigenous radars for the Maitri project. These would be new-generation variants of Central Acquisition Radar (3D-CAR), with the ability to track 150 targets simultaneously at a distance of 200 kilometers. The naval variant would be called the Revati and the air force version would be called Rohini.

Development of the missile is expected to be completed within three years of the project go-ahead, when initial testing will commence. Over 1000 missiles are expected to be produced for the Indian Army, Air Force and Navy.

Is there even any need for such missile..?

Is there even any need for such missile..?
Yes. According to our IGMDP program there was a plan to develop Trishul SAM but after many tests it failed to meet that need DRDO decided to go for a JV fist with France then they went to Russians and then to Israelis and then they return back to French. Our air defence system in the future will include VSHORAD, Maitri, Akash1 , Akash 2 , MRSAM, LRSAM (may be), BMD. The future looks good. Right now for immediate need we purchased few Spyder for this role.

I believe more than the range and the utility of the missile which we can substitute with other missiles , its the technology gain through the offer of joint development that India is trying to gain. With these inputs it would be extremely beneficial for many of our home -developed products.

Defiantely... Maitri is a point defence system & will work when all other defences fail.

for securing our vital installations we need to be sure than gessing. that to also when the thret comes in the fornm of a missile which will be either hispeed or terrain hugging cruse missile.

let anybody say whatever he wants but shooting a missile is really a tough job & multilaired system gives maximum chance of success.

for India it will be Barak (60km) - Akash (25-30km) - Maitri (7-9km)
