The tension along the Indo-China border has subdued but India is now facing a new potential threat as the Chinese navy has docked a submarine in the Indian Ocean Region in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

China's People's Liberation Army-Navy (PLA-N) has expanded its horizon from its own shores to India's "own strategic backyard" in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) as China's submarine diesel-electric Type 039 "song-class" was seen at the Colombo International Container Terminal.

Though the Chinese government has reportedly said the marine was on "its way to the Gulf of Aden for escort and anti-piracy operations" and it was there just for a stopover, India - after the recent faceoff at Chumar in Ladakh - is suspicious of its neighbour's intentions, especially as more and more Chinese warships have been witnessed in the IOR recently.

"We continuously monitor them, see what are their deployments, and what challenges they can pose for us... IOR is our area of operations...Our warships, submarines and aircraft are always ready to face any challenge," The Times of India quoted Navy chief Admiral Robin Dhowan as saying.

However, China is stronger than India in terms of naval strength. China has 51 conventional and five nuclear submarines, with more on its way, while India has just 13 diesel-electric submarines, out of which only half are said to be operational, and only one being a nuclear submarine.

It remains to be seen how India will tackle threats from China in the near future, with a weak naval base to counter the strong Chinese navy lining across the IOR.

What was all these years so called interoperability about allow US Navy to bring in the Boomers then see how this communist bast@rds run for cover

When will we as a country get out of this "Mad Cow NAM" Infection

Chinese sub in Our Waters Great.
Why !!

a) it will be chased by Indian Subs...INS CHAKRA and U209 to record Acoustic signature.
b) P-8i and IL 38 would have dropped sonobuoys and recorded radar signature, thermal, frequency bands + Propeller type.
c) We are very Thankful to Chinese to give us an Open Target to record all Acoustic, Radar (SONAR) and Thermal Signatures.
Now in future, we will not be spending time on Frequency hopper to make a Wild Search.

Even A NATION like US keeps its Subs Hidden when sending in Foes Sea or Vicinity.

Submariners must be Jumping with Happiness on this Opportunity.

This is the Biggest BLUNDER of Epic Proportions a Nation could make to Satisfy its false Ego.

Note - Yanks will also be in Sea and Air making use of this epic Opportunity.

Beautiful!!

Wow!!

why-->because

a) to test Indian submerine warfare and to chart Indian Ocean;)
b) to collect your P-8i sonobuoy accoustic in order to develop new counter measure:dance3:
c) When we offer target as bait, you sure can take that as for granted , sometime I'm wondering who is the biggest winner in this sub and sub hunting encounter, you can claim to collect data from our sub we can claim to test India's sub hunting capability. All warfare is base on deception, your Navy sure know what it means :azn:,

And yes, since your submariner will jump of joy :victory:we should have this kind of encounter more oftenly in Indian Ocean

Cheer!

Why all the Hue and cry, must be goodwill visit, like Indian navy vessel visiting Vietnam

Our News channels are going a little too hysterical on Chinese Submarine visit. Besides our navy is monitoring them :

Chinese warships are deployed in the Indian Ocean Region and we are continuously monitoring them and see what is their deployment. Along with it, our aircraft, submarines and warships are always deployed to face any challenge

Indian Ocean is our backyard and China will not challenge us right now. Instead of whining about it we should strengthen our navy for future or we will only look weak.

If the Indian Ocean is India's backyard, how come the most powerful navy there is the US fifth fleet, then?

Dude, there is no comparison between real navy i.e USN and...ahem...IN.

US 5th fleet is actually an over kill for IN.

1. There is no testing of sub warfare as India is not fighting.

2. You can learn about a sub with simple passive sensors. Don't forget our HUMINT in sri lanka!
