NEW DELHI: India has climbed 10 spots to reach the 34th ranking on the global IT industry competitive index owing to its strong human capital and research and development (R&D) base, a study said Friday.

Compiled jointly by Business Software Alliance (BSA) and the Economist Intelligence Unit, the IT industry competitiveness index benchmarks 66 countries on a series of indicators covering the critical foundation areas for IT innovation.

It includes overall business environment; IT infrastructure, human capital, R&D, legal environment and public support for industry development.

"India's competitive momentum is hugely encouraging, since unlocking the next phase of industry growth will require a continued focus on creating a favorable business and legal environment, and improved IT infrastructure," said Keshav Dhakad, who heads the BSA India Committee.

"To continue its trajectory as a rising IT power, India will increasingly need a safe and secure digital economy that inspires the trust and confidence of government, business and citizens, especially as markets across Asia become more competitive," he added.

India has also scored above its neighbour China, who stood at the 39th rank. However, it remained behind Singapore and Australia.

"India's 10 place rise in the global rankings for IT competitiveness is reflective of the continuous focus on increasing R&D and human resource capabilities in India along with creating a dynamic and barrier free environment for the IT industry," said Som Mittal, president of NASSCOM, the apex forum of the IT industry.

"India is gradually diversifying its services focus to innovation in new product development and related capabilities reflecting its gradual emergence as a leader in not just IT exports but soon also in IT products." he added.

The report also said that the global field of competition is becoming more crowded as new challengers, especially in developing Asia, raise their game to meet the standards leaders have set.

A few days ago one Chinese poster tried to bust 'the myth' of India's IT industry. I wonder what is his take on this !

Yes, we have a long way to go. We have jumped 10 spots up this year. At this rate that 'long way' will be reached sooner. On the other hand, China has jumped only one spot

Its even though not up to the mark... we are providing most solutions around the globe in IT sector, but rank @ 36..!!!! very bad i feel to this as a IT guy...

Ya true. BTW, check Malaysia. It has jumped 11 spots :bounce: and yes ranked higher than India.

I think it is IT infrastructure and overall business environment that is bringing India down. IT infrastructure in terms of high speed internet, affordable computing devices are in progress. However, I am not happy with the business environment as it is not easy to start or close a business in India.
