China and India are neck-and-neck in their development of new-generation aircraft carriers. Both navies now have ‘new’ ships undergoing sea trials, and the race is on to see which will be the first to undertake landing trials for fixed wing aircraft. The Times of India reports that India’s new carrier, a heavily modified ex-Soviet vessel named INS Vikramaditya which recently went to sea for the first time in its renovated state, will start aviation trials later this month. The new Chinese carrier, another heavily modified ex-Soviet vessel of so far unknown name, has now made eight sea trials, though nothing other than a helicopter is known to have landed on its huge deck.

Whoever wins the symbolic race to be the first country to land and launch fixed-wing aircraft, it is worth remembering just how far behind both countries are to the Americans. And it’s not just the fleet of 11 aircraft carriers operated by the US Navy, each of which is far more powerful than the Chinese or Indian vessel. It’s the ‘mini’ carriers that the US Navy is now introducing, the America class.

These are ostensibly amphibious assault ships, but can be configured to act as ‘light’ aircraft carriers. Displacing 45,000 tons and with the ability to carry 20 strike aircraft, they will actually be around the same size as India’s new carrier and arguably more capable than either the Indian or Chinese vessel.

On the other hand, Morris Jones’ words on The Interpreter last week should also be kept in mind. Reports that China is decades behind the US in space technology ‘fail to account for the “leapfrog” effect of technological advances, and the benefit of experience from other nations. Such effects are propelling much of Africa from being disconnected from telecommunications to enjoying broadband wireless services in just a few years. The effects are just as significant for China’s space missions.’

This will be the lead ship of America class assault ships:

That's why US is the superpower in the world, not only it's bigger AC's are more in no.(11), more in size (2.5 times) & can carry 3 times fixed wing aircrafts, than IN or PLAAN but even it's smaller AC's are bigger than what both India & China has.

The funny part is they are trying to pass this off as an LHA.

What race ???
USA is winner 20 years ago and will be so for 15 years minimum :D
I don't know about china :D but India isn't plannng any CBG that will operate around the world. Indian focus is clearly on IOR not beyond that

.
We are the only one from Asia operating ACC for a long time . No race . :D

Thats because thats what it is. Before there were harriers or F35 all it can carry were helos decades before. All this is nothing new. We had these for decades. And foreign nations have them as well for decades.

Is there a race ??

A confused article..meanders off.

India is in no race....

well there is certainly a renewed effort by almost all the major power in the world to build bigger & more powerful AC's which can project state power around the world:

India - currently operating only 1 old AC INS viraat, India will induct 45000 tonnes INS vikramaditya by the end of 2012 with a complement of mig-29k's on it + it is building more than 40k tonnes IAC-1 which will be inducted around 2015/16 + it plans to induct a much bigger (maybe 60k tonnes + nuclear powered + CATOBAR) carrier IAC-2 till 2020.

China - currently having no AC, China is conducting sea trials of Varyag carrier + it plans 2 more AC's which can be greater than 60k tonnes + nuclear powered.

Britain - It is building two AC's of Elizabeth class of which first will be inducted by 2016, it will be having F-35s on it + it is more than 65k tonnes.

France - currently the only navy outside US to operate a nuclear powered carrier it plans another bigger carrier of 75k tonnes + nuclear powered conventional carrier.

Russia - currently operating only one carrier it plans bigger carrier with nuclear power around 2020 timeframe.

US - no doubt the world leader in operating AC's it plans to introduce a new tech called EMALS which will make AC carries more aircrafts + it also plan to build medium weight AC's also.

i think yes there is a race. yes the external agency espionage game is going on.India can't let China to become dominating force in Indian ocean .this is just beginning of the era who ever wakes that will win . yes we can't match with Chinese defence budget but we have to fight till the gap between the two countries becomes uncrossable.

China is looking at US, will soon catch up in GDP. in a not long future, China should have 6 AC at 80K-100K tons each, the AC fighter should better or match f35. each of those fleet is very pricy.

11 years ago, Chinese GDP was $1T, vs US $10T, last year was $7.5T vs $15T, if no big surprise, within next 3 years, they will have same GDP. in next 10 years, China will have around 50% more GDP than US, 6 AC is peanuts of costs. India need to speed up the race or falling too far behind.

For now and the next 5-7 years India has the clear advantage wrt ACCs over China.

other navies have them but not quite like this one though. It has no well deck and is optimized to carry the F-35 and V-22. The V-22 is supposed to be the main way for the navy to get marines ashore from this ship but you can only use the V-22 from 2 of 6 landing positions. It also has a larger hangar than the wasp class. This ship was designed around the F-35B. It's designed to launch a large number of sorties by the F-35 and attack helicopters for ground support. I am not opposed to this ship but I wish they would just call it what it is, A CVL.
