India, China Plan First Joint Land Exercises

The date of the first-ever joint land exercises between the armies of India and China will be decided during the Indian Army chief’s visit to Beijing this week.
Gen. J.J. Singh is in the Chinese capital to discuss the date and location of the exercises with Chinese officials, a Defence Ministry official here confirmed May 21.

Noting that the two countries’ navies already have conducted exercises together, Indian Army officials said the meeting of their land forces is planned for the near future.
Such exercises are part of the defense ties negotiated between these neighboring rivals in recent years. India and China engaged in a brief war in 1962 over territorial disputes that remain unresolved.
The joint land exercises are planned despite New Delhi’s continuing unease about certain Chinese actions. For instance, India and the United States have discussed their concerns about China’s January test of an anti-satellite missile, which was used to shoot down one of Beijing’s own satellites.
New Delhi also is concerned about China’s presence in the Coco Islands, where a Chinese listening post monitors India’s missile-testing center at Balasore in eastern India. China also continues to build its Navy and is expanding its reach in the strategic Indian Ocean region.
Despite such worries, Defence Ministry sources here said, India must continue working to improve its defense ties with China.
In May 2006, during a visit to Beijing by India’s then-defense minister, Pranab Mukherjee, India and China agreed to increase their defense ties. Under the accord, signed by Mukherjee and his Chinese counterpart, Gen. Cao Gangchuan, the two rising powers agreed not to trample on each other’s regional security interests.:china:
