The USA does have friends, clearly. The problem with USA-Pakistan friendship is that, for Pakistan, everything revolves around India. Pakistan calculates every dealing with the USA seeking some help in its war with India. The USA has to worry about China. India is a better ally wrt China than is Pakistan. So the USA has friends, but Pakistan is not able to be truly one of them because it feels it must always oppose India in every way possible. So, who would help Pakistan in a time of need vis a vis India? Probably only China.

And why is Pakistan wrong in thinking along these lines.. ?

The USA Pakistan rift happened long before USA considered China an enemy. Main issue, IMO, was that past Pakistani leaders were not focused on economic development and trade the way PMIK is today.

But you are correct to point out the relatively one dimensional nature of the relationship. In the 80's when Pakistan was working with the USA against the USSR in Afghanistan, Zia was happy with just aid monies and F-16's and never asked for free trade agreements with the USA. I read somewhere that in the 80's Pakistan paid more in tariffs to USA then France even though it was a much smaller poorer economy. Many countries boomed in the 90's and 2000's based on trade with the USA......something Pakistan could have gotten a head start on if Zia would have been more long term in his thinking,

Ironically, this is India's neutrality.

India did not vote against Russia in UN. Now to balance the scale symbolically, India will oblige with some Western trade restrictions on Russia. The cat is still on the wall

Hardly doubt that at all, India is least worried about J10C, but they're more focused on winning global media headlines after Balakot February 2019 failure. They're doing all types of strikes, submarine infiltration & now Brahmos missile to level up against Pakistan success during balakot. Now I am sure majority Indians feel they're ahead in being bad a$$ in military infrastructure against Pakistan after Brahmos fired deep inside our territory.

India could've used that as leverage back when the US wasn't twisting its arm. In this case, I imagine the US threw threat-after-threat (e.g., FDI issues, trade issues, or even arming Pakistan) to get India to nix its deals with Russia.
