Never thought Id see the day when Pakistani foriegn policy seems saner than India’s.

We here would think differently. Pakistan foreign policy regarding India has almost the appearance of talks for the sake of talks. There is no real set agenda, not even a proposal on how to begin the talks. Risking talks as such is a meaningless exercise that serves no real purpose other than to invite attacks on Indians.

But that aside, I wanted to engage you in a discussion regarding the developments in Kashmir and how we think it will evolve in medium term, and what will be its implications for the region, the two countries, and most importantly, for the Kashmiris themselves. I wanted to do it last time around too, but am almost always running short on time.

My take on that is that modi govt fanned anti-Pakistan rhetoric to help them come into power. Modi can’t shed that image lest he risks looking weak. India is also a very nationalistic right wing country. Adopting this kind of insane venomous foreign policy toward Pakistan is perfectly in line with their nationalistic views.

Pakistan will unfortunately have to act like a grown up and continue to act positively toward India despite India continuealy rejecting the extended peaceful hand. It’s vital if want to help lift the poor out of their poverty.

This does not mean the military does not have any influence. It does just like Pentagon or Indian Army, however given that Pakistan has weaker civil institutions and has faced threats from a much larger adversery naturally the army has more space then India. But that is always the case in societies facing hostile environment. This is not to say the military some alien in the country - it is part and parcel of society. The real issue is Kashmir and no party in Pakistan is ready to back of that unless it wants to lose voter traction.

For instance take this tweet from PTI's nemesis the PPP's @sherry Rehman. It just mirror's the governments position.

Shame that on #InternationalPeaceDay India has refused to talk peace with Pakistan in even a routine manner at the @UN on the sidelines of the General Assembly. Running from talks won’t change the fact that this time Indian repression in Kashmir has been noticed in a UN report.
