As tension persists between Pakistan and India, the latter has now started impeding the flow of three rivers shared by the two nuclear-armed neighbours, Express News reported on Monday.

India’s Union Minister of State for Water Resources Arjun Mehghwal announced the move at an event in Rajasthan on Sunday. He said New Delhi had stopped 0.53 million acre-feet of water from the three eastern rivers flowing into Pakistan.

“The water has been stored and will be used whenever Rajasthan or Punjab needs it. It can be used for drinking or irrigation purposes.”

Another Indian minister, Nitin Gadkari, had announced similar plans just days after the February 14 Pulwama suicide bombing in occupied Kashmir.

India breaching Indus Basin Treaty: law minister

It remains unclear whether New Delhi’s latest act of aggression could be viewed as a violation of the Indus Waters Treaty. Under the agreement signed in 1960, Islamabad has unrestricted access to the western rivers Indus, Jhelum and Chenab, while New Delhi enjoys the same authority over the eastern rivers Ravi, Beas and Sutlej.

However, in December last year, Pakistan’s Minister for Law and Justice Barrister Dr Muhammad Farogh Naseem said India had started using water from the western rivers for industrial purposes.

“The treaty had ensured that India could only use water to generate electricity from these rivers if it did not disrupt water supply to Pakistan,” he said.

Expressing Islamabad’s concerns over India’s plans to build dams over Jehlum and Chenab, he had urged the World Bank and other international players to play their due role.

The minister had called out India for repeated threats to revoke the treaty, reminding New Delhi that the agreement could only be terminated with mutual consent.

What so special about it? We have already paid you around $1.8 billion (in todays terms) to build canal system so that you can compensate the water from western rivers when we block the eastern rivers.

I don't understand ,how can there be treaties, trade or even travel, let alone sports between enemies. Did I miss a memo about part time enemies ?
This deal was signed out of stupidity by Indian leaders, who thought the Kashmir issue was about water (which in fact is, more or less). So, we signed a treaty so that the issue maybe resolved in some way. What we got in return was a war in 1965. Should've scrapped the treaty the very moment they attacked. :disagree:

The heading as above; compare it with below.

So the inability to understand spoken and written English is a handicap not exclusive to PDF!

Great to note that Pakistani media manifests the problem in PDF, and emulates Indian media in twisting everything into something that will need a strong dose of narcotics to make sense (if at all).

I don't see why you can't scrap it now, it's not enforceable as both parties are enemies.

For all practical purposes it should be .
But I think the govt has another plan,it's 5-10 year plan.i think from now on Pakistan will start receiving gradually less and less water during the crop seasons and summer

.
If anyone is wondering if they are on the right side of history or not, just read the above comments.
One side is literally advocating of using water as a wepon to starve 200,000,000 people to death.

Anyways, India and Pakistan have no choice but to follow the treaty as any unilateral alterations will result in nuclear war.

Any ideas of scapping it is simple mental masturbation and nothing else.

. .
Both parties are enemies.

Practically Pakistan can't do anything because her interests are opposite to India's.

while the rains this year were enough to last us a lifetime
IF SOMEONE WOULD BUILD DAMS

but no, lets all fight over Kalabagh Dam
Pakistan must also have dams right?

. .
Pakistan should take up this matter to World Bank which was the broker for Indus Basin treaty.

And for the Chest Thumping Indians feeling proud that India has started using Water as a Weapon should remember their recent Chest thumping incidents, This card will backfire for MODI just as the so called surgical strike did.

Both parties are enemies.

Practically Pakistan can't do anything because her interests are opposite to India's.

Pakistan must also have dams right?

Keep living in the FOOL's PARADISE, Indians still haven't realized what Pakistan is Capable of.

The treaty is brokered by World Bank, otoh they are not a party. Scrapping it doesn't look good on us. Besides, stopping water to Pakistan is not in our agenda. It doesn't look good for having a good image. It'll be perceived as bullying. And we are not China.

. .
Does China have water sharing treaties with India? If not, I guess we can block rivers in Tibet from flowing into India.

Are you talking about brahmaputra ?Please do so.
Most of the tributaries of brahmaputra river are from bhutan and india, almost 70%.

And that river anyways flows through high rainfall states of india, so may be if china block some water, india will be able to audit and control its wild flow in rainy season.

And yes, be ready to answer bangladesh, why there share is been eaten by china.

And india call us terrorist state.
Dear India, we will get this water as well as the source of water from you.
India will either give us Kashmir or India will loose everything. And yes, we are ready to loose everything.
