Beijing: Riled by India's opposition to expanding SAARC, a Chinese think-tank on Tuesday accused the country of attempting to retain its supremacy in the South Asian bloc, saying it is "afraid" that an anti-India group will take shape if China joins the eight-member grouping.

In an article titled 'South Asia forum delayed by India's self interests', published in the state-run Global Times on Tuesday, Liu Zongyi, a scholar at the Shanghai Institute of

International Studies launched a scathing criticism against India, accusing it of attempting to retain its supremacy in the region.

"Generally speaking, New Delhi has not entirely changed its behavioural patterns toward neighbours despite its occasional petty favours to them.

"By readjusting its relations with its neighbours, India aims at consolidating its supremacy in South Asia and including the whole region in its sphere of influence, instead of realising common development and prosperity," the article said.

Observers say the article with phrases like India an "economically underdeveloped" country, displaying "great power chauvinism and selfishness" were rare in the state-run media especially by the official think-tanks in recent years ever since the relations improved between the two countries, showing China's frustration on not becoming the member of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC).

Stating that China is "geographically adjacent to the (South Asian) region", the article said India should back Beijing's membership in the SAARC since it has supported India's membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, (SCO), a security forum mainly comprised of China, Russia and Central Asian countries.

India and Pakistan, which are observers in SCO, have formally applied for the membership of the grouping.

"New Delhi should agree on Beijing joining SAARC if it attempts to return the favour. But it seems that the country is not that broad-minded. It is afraid that an anti-India group will take shape once China joins SAARC," it said.

Ahead of the recent SAARC summit in Nepal, Chinese official media carried articles with comments by some Nepalese politicians calling for China's admission into the grouping.

India had said at the end of the last month's summit that there was no proposal for the expansion of the SAARC membership.

The article in the daily further suggested that the SARRC could adopt the South East Asian bloc ASEAN's model in enhancing collaboration with other countries.

"Other South Asian countries have a lot of concerns about the India-led integration process of SAARC. If SAARC can imitate the 'ASEAN Plus Three' mechanism, it will be bound to push forward the integration process not only in South Asia but also within a larger region including China as well," it said.

SAARC consists of India, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nepal,

Bangladesh, Maldives, Sri Lanka and Bhutan. It has nine observers -- Australia, China, European Union, Iran, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mauritius, Myanmar and US.

Pakistan will again push for Chinese membership at the next summit in Islamabad to be held in 2016. All other SAARC members except India are either neutral or in favor of Chinese membership. India is alone in this. We will not let any agreement take shape which allow India to realise its little delusions of being the mini superpower in S.Asia. Having Beijing in SAARC makes sense as it will keep India in its senses. India is broke, China can also finance major SAARC projects. :pakistan: :china:

several mistakes (as usual)

1.india has the max clout in SAARC, china cannot enter without india's say so
2. india does not have any "little delusions of being the mini superpower in S.Asia." it is the ONLY superpower of south asia
3. india is broke  really?

.
Pakistan is a misfit in SAARC. Pakistan's natural allies are to the North and West. It has nothing or should have nothing to do with South Asia.
pakistan doesn't seem like a country in south asia. It's culture and beliefs are totally different than ours and other south asian countries.
pakistan is some middle east country in south asia.

Keep crying . Nothing will happen. But let's see why Pakistan want East Asian country to be part of South asian rim .
-Pakistan is already isolated by current govt of India at all levels. From UN , Saudi, USA , Saarc . By bringing in terrorism Modi have created awareness about internal situation in pakistan in front of the whole world. So their only hope is Chinese.
But one it understand the willingness and power push by certain minister's in Nepal and PM of Pakistan is not a coincidence. They are been remotely controlled China with the help of carrots (bribes money) . This must be understood to move on to real motive behind this . Why china desperate to be part of SAARC ? They already have large amount of trade and infrastructure works going on . But the real issue is The present Indian Govt is very proactive . It's set to raise the bar on development and improve India military might . This article is out of frustration that India started to show it's power on global stage .It's actually 1-0 for India . The matter of fact is that China is afraid of India Not the other way around as mentioned in this article. Very aggressive move by pla are delt with even more aggressive stand by Indians. Everything thwarted from intrusion to new forward post . What happened to PLA threat ? To destroy any construction on IB ? India answered with massive infrastructure projects which will put India in well placed position to take care of Chinese PLA .

Both Pakistan and China is frustrated . As their previous routines build for the last 10 years is been completely neutralised . Srilanka Is not fool to go against India . If so even usa will not be able to help them.

We can expect these kind of articles out of frustration from Chinese and Cross border firing from Pakistan . Mark my words .

Agreed. Run SAARC with your satellite states. Pakistan and China will trade among themselves. This trade relation is virtually untapped. Nonetheless, as someone said, Pakistan will push for China's inclusion in SAARC no matter what.

On topic why not pakistan leave saarc alltogether when it has nothing to contribute??It opposed all the agreements agreed by all other member states on connectivity etc.

Unlike you, India does not believe in a master slave relationship. SAARC was the brainchild of Bangladesh when it was ruled by a nationalist PM. Pakistan has no similarity with the culture in the Indian subcontinent. Ok, it had some, but it wishes to move West and I respect that. What China and Pakistan does behind closed doors is not my concern, but South Asian countries are together in this. With or without Pakistan. :agree:

Pakistan has never really fit in here. Maybe they'll have it better in the Arab coalition or a Central Asian Conference or something. :)
