India, Bangladesh sign agreement to upgrade Ashuganj-Akhaura road into 4-lane highway

India and Bangladesh signed an agreement on Thursday to upgrade the 50.58-kilometre long road between Ashuganj river port and the Akhaura land port in Bangladesh into a 4-lane highway. The deal to upgrade the 39 km long road between Ashuganj river port to Dharhar area was signed between the Roads and Highways Department (RHD) of Bangladesh and an Indian Company Afcons Infrastructure Limited. The AFD and an India-Bangladesh joint venture firm will take up the work of upgrading the remaining part of the road from Dharhar to Akhaura.

The project is part of the dollar 2 billion second line of credit extended by India to Bangladesh in 2016. The project will boost connectivity between Bangladesh and North-eastern part of India which will facilitate sub-regional connectivity among South and South-east Asian countries. Speaking at the signing ceremony, High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh Riva Ganguly Das said development cooperation is an important aspect of India-Bangladesh relations. She said both governments have identified 46 projects in Bangladesh that would improve connectivity within the country and out of the country. Road Transport and Bridges Minister of Bangladesh Obaidul Quader hoped that the work would be completed on time and quality would be maintained.

I do not understand why a naive BD should accept Indian credit to expand/extend a road that will be used to transport Indian goods to its NE. It is not pursuant to international norms. India should also pay fees for using our land, river, and port. India loves to eat free lunches.

So do you. We provide duty free access to many BD goods too. And these are not exclusively used by India blocking BD transport, it's a win win for both parties.
You're simply a convenience not a necessity. Don't give too much credit for it.

They will even extend that to SE Asia which includes Myanmar.
 
If so, India must be asked to reciprocate this SEA facility by allowing our goods to and from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Central Asian countries with whom we have historical ties.

They have added condition in that regard. It can not be one way rather two way. Pakistan also needs to allow India transit facility to connect with Central Asia.

Dont worry. Its indian line of credit lol. Utilization of indian credit is less then 2 percent in last 10 years ha ha. The difference between Japanese or Chinese funded projects and indian ones.....i dont have to say much. By the time this project will be completed we will all be dead. It will be year 3000.

No. The core point is the road expansion is to facilitate Indian transport to and from its NE. Indian goods will be carried, as a result, the roads will be needing continuous repair. So, all the burden of helping India will come over our shoulders. BD should ask for remedies. No free lunch for miser Sanghis.

I know that. What i am saying is india is too cheap to release the fund hence this project will never compete. And if it ever does hasina will be long gone and we will charge them accordingly.

Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder on Saturday said the government will not take the responsibility if anyone is shot to death along the border while bringing cattle from India.

He made the remarks while talking to reporters after attending the founding anniversary programme of Damkurahat High School in Poba upazila of Rajshahi.

“It’ll be pointless to blame others unless our character is good,” he said when asked about the shooting down of three Bangladeshi nationals by members of Indian Border Security Force (BSF) in his constituency Porsha of Naogaon.

On January 23, the three Bangladeshis –- Sanjit Kumar, Mofizul Islam and Kamal Hossain -- were killed by BSF members along Doarpalla border in Porsha upazila of Naogaon.

BSF men also took away the bodies of two of the victims.

The minister said, “We won’t allow anyone to bring cattle from India. Our upazila, district law-and-order committees and BGB adopted a resolution in this regard. Bangladesh government won’t take the responsibility if anyone is shot to death while bringing cattle cutting the barbed-wire fence.”

He also said efforts are on to bring back the bodies of the two Bangladeshi nationals.

Border killing has been a contentious bilateral issue between the two neighbours who share a porous 4,100-km border.

Delhi had promised to bring down border killings to zero over the years but the BSF continues to shoot dead Bangladeshis along the border.
