NEW DELHI: India today said all parties involved in the Iran nuclear deal should respect the country's right to "peaceful uses of nuclear energy" and work together to resolve the matter through dialogue and diplomacy.
"India has always maintained that Iranian nuclear issue should be resolved peacefully through dialogue and diplomacy by respecting Iran’s right to peaceful uses of nuclear energy and international community’s strong interest in exclusively peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program," said the Ministry of External Affairs.
"All parties should engage constructively to address and resolve issues that have arises with respect to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)," it said.
The 2015 agreement, known officially as the JCPOA, worked out by the US, five other world powers and Iran, lifted sanctions on Iran in exchange for limits on its nuclear program. The fruit of more than a decade of diplomacy, the pact was designed to prevent Iran obtaining a nuclear bomb.
President Donald Trump yesterday pulled the United States out of the landmark accord + while also asserting that he would impose economic sanctions on Iran to undermine what he called "a horrible, one-sided deal that should have never, ever been made".
Trump's announcement elicited an acrimonious response from Tehran, with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei saying, "Mr Trump, I tell you on behalf of the Iranian people: You've made a mistake."
Dismayed European allies sought to salvage the international nuclear pact with Iran, with French President Emmanuel Macron scheduled to speak to his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani later today.
Rouhani, a reformist who had hoped that the deal would boost living standards in Iran, struck a more pragmatic tone in a televised speech, saying Iran was open to talks and would negotiate with other signatory countries of the accord.
"If at the end of this short period we conclude that we can fully benefit from theJCPOA with the cooperation of all countries, the deal will remain," he said.
The leaders of Britain, Germany and France, signatories to the deal along with China and Russia, said in a joint statement that Trump's decision was a cause for "regret and concern".
China's foreign ministry said Beijing would defend the deal and urged parties "to assume a responsible attitude".
