India asks for enhanced systems on third Il-76 AEW

The third Ilyushin Il-76 airborne early warning aircraft ordered by the Indian air force will carry additional systems for enhanced performance. The AEW aircraft is expected to arrive later this year in Israel for preparation by Israel Aerospace Industries' Elta Systems subsidiary, for delivery to India in 2011.

Two converted Il-76s carrying the Elta AEW Phalcon suit have already been delivered to India. Based on their operational experience India's Defence Research and Development Organisation has asked IAI to add to the third aircraft systems for enhanced performance.

IAI has no comment on the request, but it is understood that the additional systems may include sensors that would improve the "threat picture" even under adverse conditions.

In the meantime, India experts are visiting Israel regularly.

I was waiting when this news would come ... Its been close to 2 years since we had a operational experience on Phalcon ...This is indeed great !!! India is now based on its international excercises experience (Red Flag , Garuda, etc) is MKI'zing phalcon !!!

Also the fact that Wing Co Ajay Rathore is the defence attache in Israel is further giving impetus to this !!!

Now we have to watch when they would order the additional phalcon's.

Based on the initial contract -- India has an option to order 3 more Phalcon's ...on top of the 3 already ordered.

IL 78 Based AWACS???? Who has it??? Indian AWACS Use IL76 , and This is an Enhanced version of the Previous AWACS

Oh DRDO AEW&CS ??, Its neither ion IL 76 nor IL 78, its on EMB-145s, Its not even ready, those are not as Powerful as the Phalcons Buddy.... and both are Required to have a Much stronger Eye

G550 Airborne Early Warning: Israel has acquired a number of G550s, fitted with Elta's EL/W-2085 sensor package (a newer derivative of the Phalcon system) for Airborne Early Warning (AEW) use and named the aircraft Eitam. This aircraft is heavily modified for the AEW role by Gulfstream's partner, IAI, and is also called CAEW (Conformal Airborne Early Warning) by Gulfstream Special Missions Department. Israel has also acquired a number of communications jamming equipped G550s dubbed SEMA (Special Electronic Missions Aircraft) with systems integration also carried out by IAI.[7] Singapore ordered four similar G550 CAEW aircraft equipped with the EL/W-2085 sensor package from Gulfstream and IAI.

This means that based upon the operational experience with Phalcons, IAF want to add more features in it to enhance its capability. Once done with this third AWACs, other two will be upgraded too.
