Kathmandu: India on Thursday announced USD 1 billion assistance for Nepal`s reconstruction, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj announced.

Confirming the development, Vikas Swarup, Official Spokesperson, Ministry of External Affairs, posted a picture of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj addressing the international donors conference here and making the announcement.

The announcement from India is significant as Nepal Prime Minister Sushil Koirala had sought aid at an international donors conference here to rebuild the country after it was hit by a devastating quake in April this year.

Koirala inaugurated the conference earlier today and sought donors` help to rebuild the country at an estimated cost of USD 7 billion.

Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj, who is attending the conference, made the announcement of granting an aid of USD 1 billion in presence of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and over 300 delegates from 60 nations.

The two-day conference in capital Kathmandu is being organised by the Nepal Government in order raise funds to reconstruct the physical infrastructures of the country destroyed by a massive 7.9-magnitude earthquake on April 25.

Nepal’s Foreign Minister Mahendra Bahadur Pandey said there was an urgent need to upscale investment in the infrastructure sector.

“There are some immediate and long-term priorities from the perspective of reconstruction. We need to ensure that the rubbles of the collapsed buildings are removed in an environmentally friendly way.

“Building transitional shelters for people is also a pressing priority. We will need to explore options for low-cost housing, reinstate bridges, roads, schools and health posts. For this, there is an urgent need to upscale investment in the infrastructure sector,” he said.

India per capita GDP is lower than sub saharan Africa. Pakistan is even richer than India per capita!

It is good to see citizens of a country that depends on aid from the US, China and Saudi Arabia ask such questions. Maybe they feel cheated that someone else is getting money instead of them.

There are two kinds of people in this world. There are those who only know how to take, and whose hand is always outstretched to beg. Sometimes it is free oil, sometimes it is combat jets or missiles, sometimes it is a nuclear power plant or just plain old cash. But they continue to beg in one guise or other. Agreed - they have just suffered a major catastrophe and need help and we should help, as should anyone with means and capability. As a taxpayer, I am very happy that my government is trying to assist in a small way. There is no parallel between the hard working people of Nepal and the perennial beggars whose hands are forever stretched out begging for aid.

Nepal is part of SAARC and with time the regional co operation will increase. We are already helping Sri Lankan Tamils and have already working for housing units even there.

India is one of the poorest country in South Asia. Its gdp is of africa and per capita is lower than us, but still they help Nepal????

If you ask from the Nepali population, they'll tell you their leaders are sold out to India and have put their country in India's lap. This billion goes further in buying whatever is remaining in Nepal, that wasn't owned by the Indian influence. Simple is that. There is one thing Indians don't do, its charity, friendship and the brotherhood crap. Every dollar in aid has an estimate $ 10 in expected return in some way, shape of form.
