New Delhi: During the visit of Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai to India last month, the two countries signed strategic partnership agreement according to which India agreed to train, equip and build capacity for Afghan security forces, including the Army.

New Delhi is now in the process of finalising the training module for the Afghan National Army.Accordingly, India will increase the intake of Afghan officers. The International Militaty Academy in Dehra Dun and the Officers Training Academy in Chennai and Gaya will see at least 100 Afghan officers being trained. So far, only individual officers from the Afghan military took courses at premier defence institutions in India.

With the rapid expansion of Afghan National Army, there is a shortage of middle-level officers which India will try to fill up.

A platoon-level training of Afghan soldiers had already begun last year at various locations in India.

Within a year, company-level training - which includes 100 soldiers - will also begin at specialised institutions like the Commando School in Belgaum, Counter-insurgency and Jungle Warfare School in Mizoram and High Altitude Warfare School in Sonmarg, Kashmir.

India will also supply logistics like vehicles, technology and sports equipment.

However, India is slightly wary of deals in military hardware like supply of tanks, artillery guns and ammunition because of Pakistan sensitivities.

India is also avoiding sending training teams to Afghanistan because of vulnerability to attacks.

. .
We need tanks not to use them against Pakistan or I may say we even can't but to protect some sensitive areas, Russia has already shown green light to Karzai for supply of tanks and some old fighter jets.

Which aircraft are you looking forward to?

India's training without equipment would be like a man doing a driving course without having a car of his own.

If american expect our co-operation, then this agreement has to be the first one to go..as the shewered Indians will use it as an oppurtunity to brain wash the ANA recruits and forward their own anti-Pakistan bias!

America is following a secret policy of squeezing Pakistan from two border..hopefully we will neutralize it by playing the bigger picture with Russia and China!

.
We should weigh two options :

either help afganisthan in their march towards self determination and integrity or pakistan's unfounded concerns with former being win win and latter being obscure...

For the last decade US has pushed Afghan army for US type equipments even after the decision of buying Russian made gunships and choppers US army faced many criticism in their government but they know Afghans are pretty much able to maintain a couple squadrons of Russian fighter jets and they aren't gonna buy us those toys for this WOT because it's unnecessary. For the time being MiG-25 or SU-27 is a good choice for Afghan air force.

Afghans have declined Pakistani assistance in terms of training of their military. Hopefully a level-headed Afghan leader comes into office. Karzai is a puppet and seems to flip-flop on many issues.

Any chances of Jf-17 sale for Afghan Air force ?

.
Still that helps, isn't it?

Yeah it helps them being in a larger defense environment and training infrastructure. I am not saying that only India should donate us those equipments I mean com'on Karzai till what time you will wait for donations, gear up and start charging taxes on people and increase government revenues so that we can maintain and equip our own Armed forces.

The best option for Afghanistan will be to negotiate for 30-40 odd used F-16 Block 40 from US at a very cheap rate, or Mig-29s for that matter. Mig-25s won't suit Afghan army'r doctrine, and Su-27 is a maintenance heavy aircraft, not an ideal aircraft to start your airforce with, maybe in the future.....

The money should be used to train Afghans in trades like, how they can extract trillion $ worth minerals and oil from their country and be prosper. Too much war in a country which has so much in hidden treasure.
I wish there be books and pens in Afghans youth hand then weapons to fight each other.

I also wish this for many countries in south asia, not only Afghan.

Though India ratio of spending on defence equipment is lower then Pakistan.
