Thirty-five infants have died in the last five days at Kolkata's Dr B C Roy Hospital for children, a state government-run hospital which has in the recent years become infamous for crib deaths.
While hospital sources confirmed the toll, they denied any negligence on part of the doctors and nursing staff.
"Yes, 35 infants have died in the hospital in the last five days but almost all of them were brought in a moribund condition," sources said.
The state health department formed a three-member probe committee which gave a clean chit to the hospital and ruled out any negligence on part of the authorities, the sources said.
Eight child specialists were also sent to the hospital to assist the medical staff.
According to hospital authorities, on an average, 70 terminally ill child patients are brought to the hospital every day.
"We do our best to take care of them but in some cases we can't do anything," a hospital official said.
Tridib Banerjee, chairman of the task force formed to supervise child health care, said the health department has been struggling to take the best care of child health as per instruction of chief minister Mamata Banerjee.
"We have been striving to ensure that not a single child dies for want of proper treatment," he said.
Local councillor Swapan Samaddar of the Trinamool Congress said most of the crib deaths occurred as the infants were brought in a terminal condition
