India 2nd among BRICK nations in research
India ranks second in terms of the research output contributing to world share, according to a Thomson Reuters report titled Building Bricks: Exploring the Global Research Impact of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Korea (BRICK).
With a global share of 3.4 per cent of research in the top 10 fields of science and engineering accumulated from 2007 to 2011, India beats South Korea (3.3), Brazil (2.6) and Russia (2.4) to occupy the second spot. China, with a 11 per cent research output share, is far ahead in the BRICK race.
India is the most diverse. For all 10 of the fields, it exceeds its overall share, spreading its specialisation across a wider range than China. Certainly for India and South Korea, it reflects the mature, long-term establishment of their research base, the report noted.
India lags behind China in terms of the number of research papers that are highly cited. In 2011, India produced 235 highly-cited research papers constituting 0.52 per cent of national output. In the same year, China produced 1,131 highly-cited papers with 0.72 per cent national output. Since 1996, Indias Gross Expenditure on R&D (GERD) as a percentage of the gross domestic product has remained below one per cent. China has seen a 2.5-fold relative increase in GERD.
When it comes to economic impact of Indias R&D output, the report highlights the dramatic increase in backlog of patent applications before the Indian Patent Office, which rose by 47.3 per cent to 1,23,255 from March 2011 to April 2012.
