Indian figures almost always are doctored to improve the image of the country or mitigate negatives. One good example is poverty rates. If you use the objective measure of US dollar as measure of international poverty India sinks in amongst the Sub Saharan Africans. Any doubts check out World Bank figures for absolute headcount poverty using the dollar.

But when it comes to national povety rates - that is set up by each country which tend to be more stricter India suddenly fares better. Why? The Indian government has set $0.4 a day as the poverty rate. The bar is so low [for comparison in Pakistan it is set at $0.8 a day] that the poverty figures are reduced massively. All on paper of course. Out there on the streets is another story.

The strange thing is in Pakistan govenment do the opposite. They set poverty bar at higher level then global organizations and actually increase the figures.

You can buy things cheaply in India because they have good homegrown industry.

Yes food is so cheap in India.
India has so many PPP, and it makes RSSers hungrier than North Koreans.

Not really, we are talking about absolute poverty - people living on half dollar a day. What they gona buy? Lap tops? Cars? Motorbikes? Apple iphones? Make in India cars? Make in India helicopters?

At less then half dollar a day life is limited to subsistence living. Simple abc of food/roof that matters. The fact is India has far more living under World Bank $1.25 then most countries in South Asia and that includes Pakistan.
