    • April 2
KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has suspended the party membership of an MNA and received resignations from one MPA and two town nazims of Karachi.
The MQM suspended the membership of MNA Abid Ali Umang and received resignations from Korangi MPA Syed Jarar Hyder, Gulberg Town Nazim Mohammad Ahmed Hayat and Jamshed Town Nazim Arif Ajakia. Party sources said the reason was that they were working against party discipline. These developments were confirmed by member of the MQM Rabita Committee Mohammad Qasim
Sources also said that the Haq Parast Group removed the two town nazims as they failed to improve their performance despite warnings. This is the second time that a Jamshed town nazim has resigned as earlier Tahir Mashhadi left his post in February 2006 and this time Ajakia resigned. The town's naib nazim, Zaiuddin Jamal, will serve as acting town nazim. Hayat, who had been unwell for the last couple of months, recently underwent surgery. staff report

MQM suspends its three members

KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has suspended the party membership of Coordination Committee members Shakeel Umar and Saleem Tajik for indefinite period.

According to the statement issued by the MQM’s coordination committee, the party’s membership of Karachi Tanzeemi Committee (KTC) member Farooq Saleem has also been suspended.

The statement also issued instructions to the MQM workers not to maintain any direct or indirect contact with any of the suspended members.

It further stated that the party chief Altaf Hussain is busy in the continuous process of cleansing undesirable elements from the MQM. Altaf is working 21 to 22 hours a day.

Consultations among the members of coordination committee are also part of the process, the statement added.

On Wednesday, Altaf Hussain addressing the members of the coordination committee via telephone at Nine Zero, expressed resolve to cleanse the party.

He said MQM strictly prohibits collection of donation and warned that if any office bearer or worker is found involved in this practice his basic membership will be revoked.

Altaf said MQM adheres to the policy of ‘zero tolerance’ when it comes to the instances of illegal occupation of land, plots, residences and shops or their sale/purchase, and advised that in case any member of his party is directly or indirectly involved in such practices he should voluntarily tender his resignation.

KARACHI THE MUTTAHIDA QAUMI MOVEMENT (MQM) HAS EXPELLED FORMER MNA DR AAMIR LIAQUAT HUSSAIN FOR VIOLATING PARTY POLICY.
ACCORDING TO AN OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT, DR AAMIR LIAQUAT HUSSAIN'S BASIC MEMBERSHIP HAS BEEN CANCELLED FOR HIS ACT OF PROPAGATING HIS VIEWS THROUGH THE TV PROGRAMME HE HOSTS.
THE ACT MAY CREATE RELIGIOUS HATRED WHICH IS AGAINST THE MQMS POLICY, SAID THE MQM STATEMENT.
THE FORMER MQM MNA, WHO HELD THE PORTFOLIO OF MINISTER OF STATE FOR RELIGIOUS AFFAIRS, HAD LOST HIS NATIONAL ASSEMBLY SEAT AND THE PORTFOLIO WHEN HE PUBLICLY BACKED A RELIGIOUS EDICT AGAINST CONTROVERSIAL WRITER, SALMAN RUSHDIE, UPON THE LATTER'S RECEIVING A KNIGHTHOOD FROM THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT.
TAKING DR AAMIR'S ACT OF BACKING THE DECREE AS A VIOLATION OF THE MQM POLICY, THE PARTY HAD INITIALLY ASKED HIM TO WITHDRAW HIS STATEMENT AND THEN, UPON HIS REFUSAL, ASKED HIM TO TENDER HIS RESIGNATION.
HE WAS WARNED SEVERAL TIMES AGAINST SPREADING RELIGIOUS HATRED THROUGH HIS TV SHOWS BUT HE DID NOT PAY ANY HEED. HE WAS RELIEVED OF HIS RESPONSIBILITIES SOME ONE-AND-A-HALF YEARS BACK AND THE MQM HAD UNOFFICIALLY REMOVED HIM FROM THE PARTY, THE MQM COORDINATION COMMITTEE SAID IN A PRESS RELEASE.
THE COORDINATION COMMITTEE SAID DR AAMIR USED THE MQM PLATFORM AND CONTINUED TO SPREAD SUCH VIEWS WHICH WERE IN CONFLICT WITH THE PARTY'S PHILOSOPHY.
MEANWHILE, THE MQM COORDINATION COMMITTEE ON WEDNESDAY CANCELLED MEMBERSHIP OF ANOTHER PARTY ACTIVIST, GOHAR RAZA ABIDI, SON OF AZHAR ABIDI, FOR VIOLATION OF RULES AND REGULATIONS OF THE PARTY, ADDS APP.
ABIDI WAS A MEMBER OF THE PARTY'S NORTH KARACHI SECTOR, UNIT 133-B.
