What's new

In Pakistan, coal share in power generation rises to 25%

when added to the power theft, it is estimated that up to 30% of the power received from the generating plant is lost.

-Using modern meters with photodiodes that signal meter tampering can be introduced, as well as making it a duty for a meter reader to submit a snap with the reading for a location.
-Then there are meters that can compare the load distributed and load consumed live time and can help early detection of tapped location.
All this requires capital and strong enforcement. In the long run requires a dutiful police that is getting chalans done instead of taking bribes.

.
Sir,

The number given in the News article is the cost at the 'gate -connection' of the power plant.
Sir little Correction. Its not even gate cost.
Its Only Fuel Cost? to get power plant rate add Staff Exp + Maintenance Exp + Return on Equity + Debt Payment + Interest on Debt.
Second how can you calculate power plant fuel cost when its different local/ imported + transportation cost + loss(Sahiwal Plant add Rs 1 for this).

Thats why i added Rs. 3 per unit. Still, i agree its not enough. But shouldn't be more then 9 atleast
Check nepra site for actual IPP rate. That rate only talk about fuel cost used in power. add staff + maintenance + rate of return and amount will go up.
Existing new and upcoming renewable Power unit cost are much higher because of debt payment and interest payment.

Time to run coal based plants in sahiwal, karachi and hub on a 70:30 ratio... Imported and local respectively..
Slightly decrease per cent cost but create or increase jobs market via minining and transportation sector
Not possible plants are build based on specific requirement and budget.
And don't forget local coal is less efficient (need more coal) + water content. It will cost more to transport.

Can we stop people from not paying the bills at all? This includes large state-owned corporations and provincial gov't.

Besides, what about illegal connections such as 'Kunda' where Electric company staff who come tp check are bribed and thus keep quite? In the KPK, I have come across instances where people don't pay bills and shoot at the engineers who come to disconnect. When the area supply is cut-off, there is a huge demonstration with the political leaders joining in. The ground reality is that a large segment of the Pakistani population only wants to enjoy the benefits without wanting to pay for it.

In the first world meter readers dont show up at the place. The meter readings are already available to the provider. They can simply shut the supply of a transgressor without sending over anyone. All this is again an investment, our system needs.

The meters can locate 'kunda' affected patches.Thats what i discussed above. They are very successfully being used in countries like UK,USA which to date faces problem of pirated electricity.

As for the hooligans our police needs to be trained enough, today they will will protest against meter reading tomorrow they will do the same against paying taxes..There has to be an end to this.Privileges in other ways can help.
Finally the education given to a child from the beginning needs to instill that paying taxes/bills is a duty of every citizen and not doing so is haram.

Still living in 2000??

Incidence of shooting is indeed a few years old, nevertheless, losses of electricity in Tesco & Pesco supply areas are still one of the highest:

Quote
Peshawar Electric Supply Company (Pesco) chief said the company had three million consumers with capacity to consume 5,000MW, but due to a weak transmission and distribution system, the company could take only 2,100MW.

In the absence of a proper system, the Tribal Areas Electricity Supply Company (Tesco) is also getting power from Pesco. There are 906 feeder systems in the Pesco region, of which 17 to 18 are being shared with Tesco. A loss of 50% or above is being faced by 205 feeders.

Unquote.

The above was published in May 2018, not too long ago. Could anyone explain how 50% of power loss is possible?

Thats because the meter readers are involved. They slowdown the meter which then only show 150-180 units instead of your actual consumption that is close to 400-450 units. Even in my mohallah some 4 such homes that i personally know. Now you will say why i dint complain? Because the one i am supposed ti complain in majority of cases is involved in the share. Two months ago Pesco send us 42000 bill. We went to office there one guy told my brother that give me 10 thousand and i will reduce it by 25-30 thousand. My brother refused said i dont want to be the theif who stole from 220 million. The pesco like any otger distributor is fuckedup in its own. Once the "higher authorities" made a visit to every muhallah took the slowed down and tempered meters with them. The owners went 1 day leter, paid 1000 rupees and brought meters back.

Still i suffer load shedding because of "line losses". Tgese are not losses bro. Slow down the meter and it is line losses teh, because no meter will read tgose extra units.

Build dams for energy generation and stop importing Expensive Oil and Gas. Reserve local gas just for household use so that it can last long.

Its hard to comprehend that Pakistan have $10 to $15 Billions every years for foreign oil and gas, But can’t build a fookin dam to get free hydro energy on their own.

Oil prices dropped more than half is last few years. If Govt would have charge same price for petroleum products for extra one year, they wouldn’t have to ask for foreign loan or do dam fund drama cuz people are cheap and they are not giving out money.

Would you say this was because of political pressure as the oil and gas exporting countries would lose 15Billion a year if Pakistan stopped importing. This is highly possible as our leaders always wanted political support from certain nations and they could have easily said make sure you import from us so that you would be in our good books.

It is neither the oil companies nor the oil-producing country’s lobby that is applying the pressure. Let us look at the problem in a logical manner.

Oil/energy is the ‘Lubricant’ of the machinery of industrial & economic activity. You need oil/energy to light your houses, cook your food, run the tube wells, pump your drinking water, run your cars, fly the airplanes etc. Even the conduct of wars needs lots of oil products. In fact, the whole country could come to stand still if you run seriously short of energy and oil.

Any decent size Dam would normally take 8 to 10 years to build. You cannot divert money from the import of oil/gas towards building the Dam because the country’s economic activity will suffer. What is required is to build the Dam and continue with the imports. Thus the need to find additional funds for the construction of the Dam.

Roughly speaking, energy demand goes up at half the GDP growth. At 5% GDP growth, power/energy demand would increase by about 2.5% every year. Therefore, chances are that by the time Dam is complete; the overall import requirement may not substantially decrease from today’s level. However, the average cost of production per unit of power would go down.

To make a substantial dent in the import bill, you will need to construct more than one large Dam simultaneously.

That’s is exactly the reason. Saudi (GCC in general) don’t want to lose leverage on Pakistan, so they will trying anything to keep Pakistan hooked on oil imports. They will never fund a dam. They will link politicians in power who oppose dam. Foreign countries, Pakistani Oil mafia and Politicians all hooked on money trained. It’s the average citizen who is paying the oil bill.

This seems highly possible as learnt from the KLM summit where Pakistan was blackmailed to not attend. Am sure they would blackmail our governments to not build dams because they would immediately halt oil, gas exports and also take all their money out from our banks. This would be more than enough to deal with them. Otherwise why would our governments not build dams and coal based plants. I know we all accuse them of being lazy and corrupt but I am 100% sure they know what to do as they too have access to economical and developments experts. Just think about it, how is it possible we have no electricity in the 21st century, didn't our governments know 5 years back that we would have more demand.

And don't forget local coal is less efficient (need more coal) + water content. It will cost more to transport.

Its difficult but doable. India has been doing it right across the border from thar.
The overall efficiency will decrease but a 10 to 25 % mixture will provide employment opportunities and a relief to lots of families.

Even if it increases per unit cost &/or reduce total electricity output? We are not even considering any changes required in Plant.

If you prefer Thar Coal most prefer site will be around Thar.
Reason Thar Coal Produce less heat compared to imported one + Moisture level is high. Transportation cost will be higher compared to Imported one.
