KP makes a U-turn on allowing arms on campus.

Minister for elementary and secondary education Atif Khan insisted his department had never issued such instructions and that the government would not encourage teachers or students to take firearms to classrooms.

“Our government will never encourage such practice to allow teachers to carry fire arms with them to the schools,” he told Dawn after addressing a convention organised by the All Primary Teachers Association Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The body representing over 78,000 male and female teachers of the province organised the event here against the government’s plan to allow teachers to carry small weapons into schools in the wake of the Dec 16 terrorist attack on the Army Public School Peshawar.

The convention was also addressed by Awami National Party parliamentary leader Sardar Hussain Babak and PPP MPA Mohammad Saleem Khan.

Information minister Mushtaq Ghani had earlier stated that the provincial cabinet had authorised the teachers to bring along with them small weapons for safety purposes. He had said that the teachers would engage attackers in case of any attack on the schools to avoid the APS type incidents.

Civil society groups and media strongly criticised the government for encouraging teachers to take weapons to classrooms.

Development comes over opposition of schoolteachers
Minister Atif Khan said the provincial government had never taken any decision about allowing teachers to carry weapons.

However, some teachers could keep licensed arms, which was a routine practice.

The minister said the provincial government had released Rs1.5 billion to the district administrations across the province for building eight feet boundary walls and fixing two feet barbed wire on them.

He said the money released for the construction of boundary walls had been diverted from other facilities like drinking water and toilets.

The teacher association’s president, Malik Khalid, said provision of security to students and teachers was the prime responsibility of the state and therefore, the association rejected the government’s idea on allowing arms on campus out right.

“Our duty is to teach students and not to protect them from attackers,” he said. The association’s president said the government had done legislation to ban corporal punishment in schools and that lately, teachers were allowed to keep weapon, which was very unrealistic.

“It is very illogical to ask teachers to carry firearms into school,” he said, adding that the government had spent millions of rupees on discouraging corporal punishment in educational institutions.

Malik Khalid said 4,763 schools didn’t have boundary walls in the province and therefore, the government should immediately build boundary walls around schools.

He also opposed the involvement of teachers in anti-polio campaigns and suggested that the government set up a separate body for the purpose.

Hi,

US is not the only country in world. And as I said, occasionally they carry guns and you say most. So you agree to me somewhat. Also if teachers carried guns to classrooms, there will not be mass deaths ever in school.

so yes, usa is not the only country in the world that you use it as the only example. Though I admit I'm also using Canada as an example, but I used this as an example to contradict you.

Hi,

Indeed U S is not the only country in the world---but it is THE country in the world. Nobody follows Canada---. Since when is Canada an example----there have been no major terrorist activities committed against Canada.

When you respond----please see in what context you respond to---.

So you are just trying to get a leg up just because someone somewhat agreed with you---.

Lol what. US is not THE country in the world. but then you're American, so that's expected. oh and many countries follow Canada in different fields. But that's a different topic.

We have had terrorists attack here in Canada. We even have had separatists, and few still exist today. but since you have bias against Canada, take a look at UK, or France or other European nations. They have been affected by terrorism too. Now do teachers carry guns into school there the way they're doing in KP?

No I'm not trying to leg up and still proving your "America is great, world revolves around it" analogy. Per your views, which I quote "This shows a progressive society that understands the threat and wants to confront it." basically means Canada, UK, France and other nations are not a progressive society and do not understand the threat and do not want to confront it. This is literally stupidity coming from you.

Another quote from you "There is nothing wrong with it---here in the U S---teachers arm themselves----your doctor as well---your airlines pilot---they utilize conceal and carry permit."

1) Where in UK, France or terrorists hit nations have doctors carrying weapons?
2) Again, I have not heard that major schools or entire UK, France or Germany has teachers carrying guns into classroom. Even in US, not all schools allow guns, as different states may have different laws.
3) Once an airplane is airborne, security team cannot go in to neutralize terrorists. Imagine an A380 or B777 being hijacked with 400-800 people inside. This is why they also have an onboard doctor. Thus, a pilot has gun or a Taser. Often they've air marshals, who have guns concealed. Thus, not ALL (90,000) American pilots carry guns into sky (in fact, it's a voluntarily program).

Now, tell if what other countries have their pilots armed with guns in a plane (excluding air marshals like program)?

Finally, when you respond, make sure you know what you're talking about and do a little bit of research.

Okay---be happy---you win.

Okay---be happy---you win.

It's not about winning. This is internet. But I suppose you take it so seriously that you consider this as winning or losing.

Regardless, the point of my post was to show your stupidity to consider US as THE country in the world.

Also learn to use English properly. You bring shame to your "great" American nation.

More than 8,200 terror suspects arrested in K-P

ISLAMABAD: Law-enforcement agencies in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) have rounded up more than 8,000 suspects in a fresh crackdown against militants, official documents revealed, as the province takes the lead in the implementation of the National Action Plan against Terrorism.

According to the documents – which the K-P government submitted to the Prime Minister’s Office on Wednesday – some 8,281 suspects have been arrested in 2,861 fresh operations. These include 22 clerics accused of delivering hateful speeches. The K-P government has also charged the representatives of some 222 seminaries with violating loudspeaker laws.

In comparison, the Punjab government has added the names of more than 2,000 suspects to the new list of terrorists, informed officials told The Express Tribune. They added the Sindh government has placed the names of 500 suspects on the list, the Balochistan government has identified 410 suspects, authorities in Islamabad have named 150 suspects and Gilgit-Baltistan has named 50 suspects.

As part of its efforts to implement the National Action Plan, the K-P government has identified over 90 terrorist cases which are to be transferred to military courts and has allocated Rs760 million for the recovery of 615 ‘deadly’ terrorists who have been declared absconders, the documents revealed.

Authorities in the province have set up a counter-terrorist force with the induction of 1,760 personnel who will be deployed at seven new police stations. They have also deployed 24 new law enforcement units, comprising 1,200 personnel in total, in 12 sensitive districts. Some 1,323 additional personnel have been inducted in the prison security force, the documents said.

The K-P government has asked the federal government to return 230 platoons of the Frontier Constabulary. It has also issued three ordinances and held one meeting of the apex committee to implement the NAP. These are the K-P Sensitive and Vulnerable Establishments and Places (Security) Act 2015, the K-P Restriction of Rented Buildings (Security) Act 2014 and the K-P Hotel Restrictions (Security) Act 2014. The province also sought Rs4 billion from the finance ministry for enhancing security of public sector universities operating under the Higher Education Commission.
