Three students of Usman Institute of Technology (UIT), Karachi have developed a model for wearable robotic legs, which will help disabled persons move and function on their own again.

“We have developed this exoskeleton model for paraplegics to assist them in the functions of sitting, standing and walking,” explained Moutasim Abbasi, who led the project. The other two students included Adil Hanif and Muhammad Usman.

The group, working under the supervision of Associate Professor Engineer Raza Jafri, exhibited their four months of hard work and research at the Pakistan Auto Parts Show (PAPS) held recently at Expo Centre, Karachi.

The battery-powered model cost the students Rs150,000 and runs with a motor. A fully charged battery runs for 30 to 45 minutes.

“This wearable exoskeleton will help paraplegics get rid of wheelchairs and crutches,” Adil added.

Explaining some features of the bionic device, he said that six motors attached to the system will function as an alternative for major joints such as hips, knees, and ankles for positioning the upper body, thighs, shank, and ankle.

The exoskeleton also has an ability to curl up a person weighing 85 kilogrammes and can exceed this limit if the motors, hydraulics and mechanical structure are customised further.

“We are planning to commercialise this prototype at a very reasonable cost for the paraplegics that would be a fraction of the price of similar projects in Japan and Berkeley,” Moutasim added.

Projects such as these, he hoped, could prove a breakthrough in such bio-technical aids which would be extremely beneficial in a developing country like Pakistan.

Our gems never cease to amaze me anymore, A big kudos to them.
Absolutely we just need to utilize and manage our resources properly and we can generate good amount of revenue at national sector if our generation specially Engineering Community is used. Few suggestions from myside as an Engineer myself is :-
1) Software Based products. It is known in Pakistan that it has one of the best programmers in the world. Even the first virus in computing history known as "brain" was made by three Pakistani brothers. So why isn't we utilizing our talent in developing and selling new apps in Android and I store is beyond comprehension to me. And it is easy to build such softwares and not time consuming.
2) Hardware based projects , if you go to China they will provide you any hardware which you wish with your specifications. So same projects can be offered by Pakistan in competitive prices to earn good revenue.
3) R and D based projects. The above mentioned project is a clear example of projects which our nation can make to generate great amount of revenue for our country

Those sure are excellent suggestions, we need to invest more in high end education, a lot more as our budding young minds seem to have an innate ability in engineering no question about it and we sure can produce reliable hardware ourselves eg the centrifuges (extemely complex machinery as you will know) we designed were amongst the best in the world even the Chinese were impressed by them and wanted TOT, we just need more investment and better marketing so local businesses buy Pakistani instead of importing from Korea when we can and do produce similar quality hardware.Kudos Hammad
