Many Chinese citizens retired to desert area and spend the remaining years of their lives planting trees with the goal of creating a better enviornment for the future generations, hats off to them.

This tedious, very demanding and non-eye catching, non-glamour persistent efforts over decades that will gradually improve the quality of a nation. This concept of "loving country" 爱国 is a very rare concept nowadays, which is hardly understood by many in many countries. This kind of things in aggregate will determine the rise and fall of civilizations over decades or centuries, as well as the quality of life of that civilization! And the goodwill of the people still needs the coordination and help by the state to realize the great efforts with great results!
