Imran reprimands PTI MNA over Mumtaz Qadri remarks

The Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) MNA Mujahid Ali Khan had to face reprimand from none other than party chairman Imran Khan for what many said his astonishing demand for the honourable release of Mumtaz Qadri.

Qadri, who was one of the guards of ex-governor Punjab Salman Taseer, had him shot dead a couple of years back in Islamabad for what he believed the governor’s apparent remarks against the blasphemy law. Mujahid made his way to the assembly by winning a seat from Mardan.

Imran summoned the PTI MNAs to his residence for an informal meeting on Friday and the forum had a review of the performance of the party legislators during the ongoing budget debate in the National Assembly.

“Imran generally expressed satisfaction over the level of speeches by his party lawmakers but came down hard on Mujahid Ali Khan, who had during his budget speech the other day demanded honourable release of Qadri,” a PTI MNA from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa told The News on condition of anonymity.

The PTI chairman asserted that no one could be allowed to make such a damaging statement on the floor of the National Assembly and asked the legislators to first consult the seniors in case they wanted to air their views on a sensitive matter.

The party source said Imran reiterated the party policy on the issue and said that Islam never favours or encourages that a person should be condemned unheard and insisted the law should take its course regarding the killing of the late governor.

Within hours after Mujahid’s speech that triggered reaction not only in Pakistan but also abroad, the PTI had to issue a clarification to explain that what the MNA said in the National Assembly could be his own opinion but not of the party.
