Imran Khan's Facebook fan base swells

Pakistani cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan, also known as "Im the Dim", may have become the butt of jokes for his allegedly hypocritical ways, yet nearly three lakh people, mostly youth, want him to become the next prime minister of his country.

On a fan group created on social networking website Facebook "We want Imran Khan to be the next PM of Pakistan", his fan base is about to touch 300,000. The page is full of "we love you Imran" and "Inshallah you be will be the next PM of Pakistan" messages.

Former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf, who too has used Facebook to interact with fans, is just over a lakh fans ahead of Khan.

Khan's fans are swearing by his name on micro-blogging website Twitter too. "I do have an icon in my life. And that person is Imran Khan. He is just the light house in my life. My godfather," tweeted Faisal.

Another fan called him the "last hope for Pakistan".

However, with Khan's ambivalence on crucial issues plaguing the country, there is no dearth of people making fun of him either. "Can anybody tell me what Imran Khan is blabbering about here in Karachi today," tweeted Akif Bhamani.

Hamza Baloch said he should "run his hospital", ask for "chanda" (funds) and keep away from politics. Another tweet read: "Down with Imran Khan's hypocrisies".

Noted rights activist Ali Dayan's fun tweet "did he make "the impossible possible? Did he levitate?" was widely retweeted too.

The latest issue of The Friday Times weekly has a caricature of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief saying, "My name is Imran Khan. And I am not a terrorist!" - a take on the Shahrukh Khan-blockbuster "My name is Khan".

Jugnu Mohsin, the woman behind the fictitious character "Im the Dim", wrote for an Indian weekly that Khan is pursuing a doctorate in hypocrisy. "I took my 'O' levels in Hypocrisy when I wrapped up Jemima (his former wife) in a chaddar and presented her to the gullible people of Pakistan...I then got my 'A' levels in Hypocrisy when I entered politics and took a crash course in Double Speak, Double Overs and Double Everything.”

Imran foresees change

Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaaf Chief Imran Khan while hinting at major change in the political scene of the country claimed that his party would form the next government and asked party loyalists to be ready for the emerging scenario.

He expressed these views while talking to party’s women wing office-bearers at PTI office on Sunday.

PTI leaders including Umer Sarfaraz Cheema, Salooni Bukhari, Talat Naqvi, Aneela Malik, Yasmeen Khan, Dr Seemi Bukhari, Ishtiaq Malik, Nausheen Hamid Miraj, Mian Mehmood-ur-Rasheed and others were also present on the occasion.

Imran said that only the elected government had the right to discuss the country’s affairs with other states and called for restricting the Chief of Army Staff from holding talks with other governments regarding state matters. He said, “Corrupt people could not hold accountable their partners in crime and expecting accountability from the incumbent government is not possible.”

The PTI chief while claiming that people from inside the PNS Mehran were involved in the tragic event some days back demanded that the facts should be made public after thorough investigations into the incident.

He maintained that rulers could not protect the sovereignty of the country, as they had grabbed power by striking a deal with the Obama administration.
Imran said that corruption was one of the major problems being faced by the country, saying that the PTI would root out this menace after coming into power. He also said the PTI would convert the huge offices and buildings into educational institutions.

Imran urges COAS to take bold stance on drone attacks

Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan on Sunday urged the Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Pervez Kiyani to take a bold stance on the issue of American drone attacks and US interference in the country as he underlined the need to review Pakistan’s policy on war against terror.

Addressing thousands of the participants on the last day of a two-day sit-in, staged by Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) at Native Jetty Bridge to protest against the US drones attacks, Imran warned that the PTI would stage sit-ins in every part of the country to halt the Nato supplies if the drones attacks are continued. He said that Pakistanis would not tolerate the drone attacks and told the people to be ready for the sit-ins in Lahore, Multan, Rawalpindi and other areas of the country.

In his concluding speech, he urged the government to end its cooperation with “Washington’s war on terror”, saying that it was not Pakistan’s but America’s war. “Thousands of innocent Pakistanis, women and children, have lost their lives in the US drones attack,” he regretted.

There was not a single Taliban militant in Pakistan before 9/11 but we are facing acts of terrorism, bombing and drone strikes because of our joining this war, Imran said. He said out that the US drone strikes were creating “suicide bombing factories.”

He alleged that the government would not cut Nato supplies from Pakistan because “they are getting dollars from the US”. He also demanded the government stop taking foreign aid. Imran said that the present government has failed to protect the sovereignty of Pakistan, saying that it was the time to launch a countrywide campaign to remove the government.

He announced that he will take steps to remove the differences between Mohajirs and Pukhtoons in the metropolis and bring life back to Karachi.

Sunni Tehreek chief Sarwat Ejaz Qadri, Majlis Wehdat-e-Muslameen leader Hassan Zafar, Jamaat-e-Islami leaders Dr Merajul Huda Siddiqui and Mohammad Hussain Mehanti, Nationalist Parties leaders and local leaders of Tehreek-i-Insaf in their addresses condemned the US drone attacks and American operation in Abbottabad.

They demanded the governmen t cut the ties with the United States forthwith and underlined the need of unity among the Pakistani people. Despite sizzling and sweltering heat, thousands of Karachiities joined the sit-in for the second and the last day.

Workers of Tehreek-i-Insaf , Sunni Tehreek, Jamaat-e-Islami and civil society participated in the sit-in. They were carrying their respective party flags and raised ear deafening slogan of “Kon Bachaya Ga Pakistan Imran Khan Imran Khan”.

A participant, Hasnain Qaimkhani, who came from Mirpurkhas to take part in the sit-in, told The Nation that he came here to express solidarity with the PTI in its protest against the US aggression against Pakistan.

“They (American’s) have killed thousands of Pakistanis in the drone attacks but the government and opposition have failed to raise their voice against the American aggression and to stop the drone attacks.”

“Imran Khan is the hope for the Pakistani nation,” he said and added that the participation of the thousands of Karachiites in the sit-in was an expression of their confidence in Imran Khan.

Hundreds of families also participated in the sit-in along with their infants and children to express solidarity with Imran Khan.

Ms Zubaida Karim, 45, a residence of Clifton, said that she came here along with her five family members to condemn the US drones attacks in Pakistan. She said that Imran Khan was a sincere politician and he needed support from masses to break American clutches. We stand behind Imran Khan as he is the last hope for the Pakistani people.

Imran Khan successfully garnered the support of some of the right-wing parties, including the Sunni Tehreek, Jamaat-i-Islami, Jamiat-i-Ulema Islam, and Khaksar Tehreek because of a strong line he has taken against American drone attacks. A large number of people from the northern region of the country were also seen at the rally. The presence of liberal and moderate people was also witnessed in the sit-in of Tehreek-e-Insaf.

I've never said this article was anti-Pakistan, but I've seen this perennial tendency of the thread starter to post anti-Pakistan articles, & nothing positive about the country.
