ISLAMABAD/HEATHROW: A day after denying Imran Khan owned an offshore entity, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) spokesperson Naeemul Haq on Friday asserted that his party chief formed a 'legal' offshore company through his earnings from cricket.

Speaking on Geo News talkshow 'Naya Pakistan', Haq said Mr. Khan was playing cricket in England and Australia, an offshore firm was formed following all legal formalities when he was playing for Sussex county club to buy a flat in London.

"I was Imran Khan's bank bank manager in London at that time, his accountants formed this company to buy the London flat," said the PTI spokesman.

He added that when the flat was sold, Imran brought the money to Pakistan through Habib Bank.

Answering a question about Mr Khan's tax returns and this offshore firm, Mr Haq said he will reveal the details to the media on Saturday after talking to Mr. Khan's accountant.

In an interview published in The News a day earlier, Mr. Haq was quoted as denying Mr Khan's ownership of an offshore company. In the report, he had maintained that Mr Khan himself owned the London flat. The report published in the paper stated that a 'Benami' offshore firm ‘Niazi Services Limited’ owned Imran Khan's flat in South Kensington, London.

According to the paper, the offshore firm was made for 'sporting consultancy' and was active till 2005. The London flat was however sold on March 17, 2003.

When asked why he denied the existence of the offshore company earlier, Haq simply said he forgot.

He was neither in politics back then nor there was any SKMH or anything like that. Problem is not that if someone had/having offshore accounts but main problem is the money stored in those accounts as how that money was earned and more importantly how was it transferred to those accounts. If IK has violated any rule then hang him first but for God Sake start the investigation to know who is how much clean. For Pakistan both offshore accounts in tax evading heavens and accts is Swiss banks are same as if at all tax is/wud be deducted from those accounts, it does not reach Pakistan but is deducted by the country those accounts are in.

Now all of a sudden, offshore companies will become 100% ISO 9001 certified Halal/jamhoori & Judiciary approved.

Imran Khan confirms, he made an offshore company to avoid taxes

LONDON: Pakistan Terheek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan confirmed to journalists while answering questions in London on Friday, that he too owned an offshore company which he created in 1983.

Answering questions posed by Geo News, Imran Khan confirmed that he made his offshore company in the days he was playing county cricket. He added that he had made the company to avoid paying taxes as he wasn’t a resident of UK.

Imran Khan has been the strongest critic of the incumbent government in Pakistan and had stated in April that the “Only reason ppl open offshore accts through Panama is to either hide wealth, esp ill-gotten wealth, or to evade tax or both.”

Imran Khan, former cricketer turned politician, told journalists in London his accountants had advised him that if he was going to sell his property, being a non-resident he would have to pay heavy taxes. To avoid paying those heavy taxes, the PTI chief said the property was owned through an offshore company.

Until Imran Khan’s confirmation his party’s spokesman Naeemul Haq kept insisting that the said property was always owned in the name of Imran Khan.

According to the United Kingdom’s official land registry records, Imran Khan’s property – a flat in South Kensington was registered in the name of ‘Niazi Services Limited’ of Jersey, Channel Island, on May 3rd 1984.

According to the records, the flat was sold in March 2003 for GBP 715,000.

Earlier on Friday, TheNews reported that ‘Niazi Services Limited’ was registered in the jurisdiction of Jersey, Channel Island on May 10, 1983 with company code 26211 on the address Langtry House, La Motte Street, St. Helier, Jersey, according to the documents obtained from Jersey authorities after paying legal fees.


Jersey of Channel Island is one of the most famous havens for offshore companies and is also named as one of the ‘jurisdictions’ of offshore havens in recently released database of International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ).
