Imran Khan inaugurates 1,320 MW power plant in Pakistan

OCT 22 2019, 16:10PM IST

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has inaugurated a 1,320 Megawatt (MW) power plant in resources-rich Balochistan province that aims to generate low-cost electricity, an initiative under the ambitious USD 60 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.

The China Hub Power Plant is the first joint power project between Pakistan and China under the CPEC initiative and would generate electricity utilising coal from local mines, the Business Recorder, a Pakistani financial daily, reported.

Inaugurating the plant, Khan said every kind of facility will be provided to assist the joint project.

"This is the first joint project under the CPEC and we want to see the pattern in future too. By utilising coal from local mines, the power plant will be able to generate low-cost electricity," Khan said. He said there are 185 tonnes of coal reserve in Pakistan.

"If we increase our productivity then we could rescue the country out of the current crisis," he said. Pakistan has been grappling with power crisis in the recent years. The difference between demand and supply which was 5,000MW in 2013, has reached up to the level of 6,000MW in 2018, according to reports.

Noting that Balochistan is full has rich mineral deposits, Khan also urged the authorities for more projects where the locally produced coals can be used.

The CPEC, launched in 2015, is a planned network of roads, railways and energy projects linking China's resource-rich Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region with Pakistan's strategic Gwadar Port on the Arabian Sea. The Pakistani government had approved the processing of 1,320 MW imported coal-based power project at Hub in November 2014.

. . . .
Coal power will change the local climate with drastic negative side effects which why China is ditching it

New technology can greatly cut back on the coal pollution

China's 2019 coal imports set to rise more than 10%

In every coal thread one such post (the one you qouted) definitely shows up. For decades India has polluted our neigborhood whilst we have insisted on using gas, depleting our gas reserves, then importing LNG, damaging our trade balance. All the time we have had access to coal. Coal is the largest power source in Germany to this very day!

Poor countries cant be picky when it comes to this kind of stuff. Heck the area around West Birmingham is still called "Black Country" because of how over use of coal turned things black there once upon a time. Now that the UK is industrialized they have the luxury of choosing power sources and the black country has been green for very long even if the name stuck. On top of that as you say modern coal plants produce significantly less pollution.

The problem is not power generation in Pakistan, it distribution. We still using decade old technology, that causes massive loss of electricity. If we upgrade that, then electricity issue will be solved

How much is installed capacity of Pakistan?

. . .
i think its credit goes to china as our govt institutions are too much incapable to complete it on their own

i think there are also some elements in current govt who are doing same acts of previous govt ,bureaucracy is still corrupt,I personally know retired secretary who is using govt servants for their home jobs like cleaning, gardening etc and also using govt transport logistic vehicles for shifting their luggage from one house to new house these days, this all is corruption and major reason for loss and uncontrolled expenses of our institutions.Look at tiktok model making videos from p.m house,it shows level of seriousness and security of p.m house staff
