Hi-Res pic of this Boeing-built aircraft, arriving recently, to join the Air Force's existing fleet of 3. Six more to come, estimated by 2014.

Tail Number: CB-8004

Wow that is a lot of money, but I suppose it is also a lot of plane. Really fantastic looking bird, lucky IAF.
From what I understand this bird brings lot of capabilities that previously either did not existed or was not as easy to perform. C-130 and C-17 both are recently inducted but you can see that they are first aircraft to be used in disaster management. I am not sure if we have ordered them in correct numbers, it makes to have more of them.

Actually the deal also includes a few "sweeteners", or hidden items. That figure is not simply for ten aircrafts. Apart from the maintainance, spares and overhaul facilites, it also includes a high altitude engine test facility and a trisonic wind tunnel facility at DRDO, worth about 500 million dollars. (And that is just what we know from public domain info.) Both these are sophisticated and cutting edge technology, the likes of which exist only in a select few places in the world, and will bring in tremendous benefits to Indian aviation research in future.

These additional items, hushed away from publicity, are what makes this deal so expensive. Not to mention the fact that the C-17s themselves take the IAF's strategic reach to a completely new level.
