Gazipur, JAN 21: Biswa Ijtema, the second largest congregation of Muslims after Haj, started yesterday on the bank of Turag in Tongi, and the first phase of the congregation would end tomorrow, with the Akheri Munajat seeking blessings for peace and progress for the Muslim Ummah.
Defying chill in the air, thousands of devotees thronged the Ijtema venue, to attend the Jumma prayer. The prayer started at 1.38pm. Traffic on Dhaka-Chittagong highway came to a standstill, when the musullis sat down on the road to attend Jumma prayer, with a grand congregation of devotees. Maulana Zobair Hasan of Kakrail Tablgh Mosque conducted the Jumma prayer. However, some devotees failed to take part in the prayer, due to accommodation problems.
Shamsul Haque Tuku, state minister for home, along with state minister for health, Captain (retd.) Dr Md Mojibur Rahman Fakir, Gazipur-3 constituency MP advocate Rahamat Ali , Gazipur-2 constituency MP Jahid Ahsan Russel, Dhaka divisional commissioner Main Uddin Abdullah, and Tongi municipality chairman advocate Ajmot Ullah Khan, joined the Juma prayers yesterday.

On the first day of the 47th Ijtema, Maulana Abdul Wahab of Delhi delivered sermons after Fazr prayer, while Maulana Omar Farukh of Bangladesh translated the sermon in Bengali. The sermons were being at once translated into 16 different languages, including Bengali, English, Arabic, Tamil, Malay, Turkish and French.
At 10.30pm, Maulana Ibrahim of Pakistan delivered special sermons to students and teachers of Bangladesh. After Jumma prayer, Maulana Junayed Hossain of Bangladesh delivered sermons to devotees present at the venue.
In their sermons, the Islamic scholars laid emphasis on Iman, Amol and Akhlak. They urged the devotees to follow religious doctrines of Quran and Sunnah.
Ijtema organisers said that around 9,000 foreign pilgrims from 95 countries had joined the religious festival, adding that more were expected in the next two days from Pakistan, India, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia and other European countries.
Different voluntary organisations and government departments, including roads and highways, public works, information, power, health and the fire service have been keeping a close watch on the proceedings of the festival.
Police control room sources said 15 pickpockets and snatchers were caught till Friday, from the venue.
Three persons, including a police constable, died during the Ijtema, till Friday evening. The devotees were identified as Abdur Rahman,75, and Safikur Rahman, 65. Both of them suffered massive cardiac arrests. The police constable, who died on Thursday at Tongi Pilot High School, has been identified as Ashraf Ali of Mymensingh district.
Tongi Hospital sources said that 95 devotees had so far been been given treatment. Of them, 27 had been admitted to the hospital and 16 were sent to different hospitals, they added.
Mobile courts have realised Tk. 49,450 in fines from different hotels and restaurants at the venue, and 30 cases were filed under Vehicles Act, till Friday.

Yaar, why aren't government developed this area where Ummah can enjoy the environment while spread the message of Islam. I hate to see their suffering. This has been going on for so long that it's just not fair. :hitwall:

.
I was thinking 'bout that also. Why don't they develop that place or build one of those huge mosques(at least proper accommodations) i don understand. Living in the city of mosques its kinda weird.

They should let private firms enter this areas and develop new infrastructures so they can make some money. This is the one of the largest muslim gatherings and people want to spend some money. we should capitalize.

I'm not sure 'bout money but I do believe(as we are a peaceful country in the end) this congregation will bring peace to this world through the prayers of so many souls.

Development of this area will improve our image around Muslim world beside the economic benefit. Hotel, motel, sanitation are few things that needs to be improve to better facilitate these devotee. I am ashamed of Bangladeshi government from past to present. How can we call ourselves true Muslim when we are ignoring the condition of millions of Muslim year after year. I hate it.

We point out finger toward Pakistan all the time but I can assure you that Pakistan government would made this place world class long ago.

The first meeting was reportedly held in 1946 [4] (although various sources indicate other dates for this) and continues to be organized by the Bangladesh Tablighi Jamaat. It lasts three days and is attended by over five million Muslims[5], making it the second largest congregation after the Hajj to Mecca but Hajj is farz(must) on the other hand Ijtema is not Farz. The program concludes with the Akheri Munajat, or final prayer. The tradition of Ijtema was initiated by an Indian savant named Maulana Ilyas and began as a small group of religious-minded individuals gathering at a local mosque. For forty-one years Tongi has been the chosen location, although similar programs are held on a lesser scale in other countries. The Ijtema is non-political, and therefore perhaps it draws people of all persuasion. Prayer is held for the spiritual adulation, exaltation and welfare of the Muslims community. This immensely popular program gives the people of Bangladesh an opportunity to interact with Muslims from other countries and is commonly attended by prominent political figures.
