For the first time a ‘sounding’ rocket designed by students of the Isro-sponsored Indian Institute of Space Technology has been launched successfully here.

The rocket, launched at the Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launch Station at Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre on Friday, is named “Vyom”, which means “sky” in Sanskrit.

It was designed by the B.Tech students of IIST under the guidance and infrastructure support of experts from VSSC, an IIST release said today.

In all 26 students, including 10 alumni of 2007 batch, actively contributed to its development and the design and sub-systems were reviewed by a steering committee of experts from IIST and VSSC.

Vyom has an overall length of 2.3 metres and a maximum outer diameter of 207 mm and a lift of mass of 88 kg.

The Design

VYOM is a single stage sounding rocket capable of carrying a 10 kg payload to a nominal altitude of 13.7 km, when launched at an elevation of 750. The spin stabilized rocket, propelled by a solid motor, has a length of 2.3 meters and a maximum outer diameter of 207 mm and it weighs 88 kg at lift off. The design of all subsystems of VYOM has been reviewed and cleared by ISRO's Launch Vehicle Design Teams for Solid Propulsion, Aerodynamics, Payload, Structures and Mission. The students had the guidance of the Advanced Technology Vehicles and Sounding Rocket Project under Dr. K. N. Ninan, Emeritus Professor IIST, the Project Director, for the overall design of VYOM.

The Payload

Students designed the payload which consists of a new tri-axis accelerometer package, designed to measure acceleration of the rocket in 3 axes. The accelerometer works on a low 5 V power supply (15 V for the currently used one, in Rohini sounding rockets) and a novel low cost Power Switching Module (PSM) reducing the cost by almost Rs.80,000 (present cost 1.4 lakhs). For transmitting the real time flight data to the ground station, the payload uses S-band antenna transmission system. The payload also includes a standard VSSC accelerometer package as a reference.

The payload was fabricated at the in-house facilities of VSSC; the assembly and integration were done under the guidance of Sri. V. K. S. Panicker, Associate Project Director, ATVP, as the focal point. Students actively participated in the testing and integration of the payload and had interaction with experts during the process. The IIST payload team had Dinesh Dhankar, Gaurav Bhalotia and Gaurav Yadav as the active members, with later assistance from Pritesh Sinha, Naveen Chander, Sahul MPV and Abhishek Patil for the design of PSM with testing and integration activities. The package has undergone standard test and evaluation protocols followed for Sounding Rockets at Systems Reliability (SR) Entity of VSSC.

these institutes are backbone of science in India. GOI should pay more to these students and give placement in isro or DRDO like organisation.
