There's too much tribalism in Afghanistan, it's not just Pashtoons vs others, the others also fight amongst themselves. Also, Pashtoon too fight with each other. When it comes to ANA, those poor Afghans join the military because of confirmed salary at the month end because there are no other job opportunities, and that's why you'll see them leaving the fight when faced with trouble.

You'd see militias doing better against Taliban because they are better motivated to defend their tribe, area or people. ANA is a mix of all ethnicities who have allegiance to their own tribes. There's very little nationalistic motivation involved here.

Moreover, Taliban pay their guys better than ANA, and have an ideology to brainwash youngsters. A 17 year old is more likely to fight till death if he knows he's going to heaven and will get hoors.
