IED attack kills NATO service member in southern Afghanistan

A service member of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) died following an explosion in southern Afghanistan on Friday.

The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) following a statement confirmed the incident and said, “An International Security Assistance Force service member died following an improvised explosive device attack in southern Afghanistan today.”

The statement did not disclose further information regarding the exact location of the incident and nationality of the deceased soldier.

International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) generally do not disclose identities of the NATO soldiers killed in Afghanistan, saying, “It is ISAF’s policy to defer casualty identification procedures to the relevant national authorities.”

At least 14 NATO soldiers including 11 US troops and 3 soldiers from the other NATO member countries have been killed in Afghanistan since the beginning of 2014, according to icasualties.org which tracks NATO forces casualties in Afghanistan.

Taliban militants frequently use improvised explosive device (IED) to target Afghan and coalition security forces, however in majority of the incidents Afghan civilians become the target.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) following its report said that the improvised explosive device (IEDs) planted by anti-government armed militant groups, were the major contributor to civilian casualties in Afghanistan.
