IAI and BEL team up for future LR-SAM ship-defence systems

Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and Bharat Electronics Limited India (BEL) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to jointly work on future long-range surface-to-air missile (LR-SAM) ship-defence system projects.

As per the terms of the MOU, IAI will continue to act as the design authority and serve as principal sub-contractor to BEL in the manufacture of sub-systems.

BEL will function as lead integrator and produce major sub-systems under the agreed cooperation framework.

BEL marketing director HN Ramakrishna said that the team would work closely together on the most sophisticated and advanced programmes and continue to operate under the support and guidance of the DRDO.

IAI has previously worked on joint development programmes with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian defence industry for the Indian Navy and Air Force.

Commenting on the partnership, IAI president and CEO Joseph Weiss said the partnership would further enhance the company’s ability to provide better solutions and service to support Indian defence services.

Using the Barak 8 missile under development by both nations, the LR-SAM is intended to boost the Indian Navy’s capabilities in safeguarding its platforms from incoming missile threats.

The naval version of Barak 8 is a MR-SAM(70km), so does that mean they r talking about a New SAM or its about th Air force version of Brak 8 being called here as LR SAM(120km) as a similar article about Barak 8 was posted on PDF a few days ago...:what:

Navy calls Barak 8 as LRSAM.
Airforce calls it MRSAM

It is the same. This one is also talking of Barak 8.

Well, there is indeed a joint project to develop a 120 km range version of Barak 2 MRSAM.It was reported by Shiv Aroor.

I thought India has interest in S-400 SAMs.

Both are different systems intended for different purposes. While the S-400 is meant to intercept IRBMs and high altitude strategic bombers, the Barak 8/2 is to defend against terrain hugging LACM,sea skimming AShMs,NLOS BSMs,TBMs and fighter & strike aircrafts.

I belive the BARAK 2 is the naval version, the IAF designates it the MR-SAM/BARAK 8 IIRC that is!.

Thats right, IN calls it Barak-2 with 70-km range.

Barak-8 is the land-based version for Army. According to Prasun, there is a missile called Barak-8NG
with 120-km range thats in development and is the real "LRSAM".

Well our ranges are completely f*cked up.

120kms in reality is MRSAM if we talk about a land based SAM.

But according to specifications, S-400 can engage targets flying as low as 30m.
